I'm a German developer living in Berlin. It's because this is a 3rd world country. Germany only now realizes that video games are a thing. So far 90% of games made over here, are mobile games. And most studios are focused on those. If they're not focused on mobile, it's VR/AR.

Shit sucks. I recently started at a studio that's making a simulator for PC. It doesn't pay a lot and I hate the genre. At least it's better than making Candy Crush 28.

I did start seeing more "actual" games being made by startups. But nothing major yet. I imagine in a few years, there may be more AA and AAA popping up when germany starts catching up to 2020.

We're just about starting to make watchable TV shows, our movies are dumpster fires that only get praise by germans and trashed everywhere else in the world. That's german entertainment for you.
As far as technology is concerned, our government is a decentralized, unconnected mess that literally stores your personal info on paper in their basement. I recently had trouble getting a permit because they wanted to fax it to me. If faxing is a common way of communication to you in 2020 i don't know what to tell you.

I'm seeing more studios popping up. And actual developers (not publishers) are starting to get fed up with the mobile shit. I keep hearing about people wanting to open their own studio to make something bigger. However, what also happens a lot is that actually skilled developers that have an interest in AAA games, just move out and work wherever the studio is at. Mostly America. Right now, because of corona, that's difficult. So I imagine people are slowly realizing that there is a possibility to make games without getting cucked. Working from home has also become a pretty big thing and is working a lot better than expected.

I expect a growth of actual games being made here in the next 5-10 years. However, those are only my thoughts and my opinion, based on what I'm seeing. I'm not an analyst and don't have any data or whatever to base my assumptions on.

They missed the best period of gaming due to historical reasons and as such there's no cultural backbone of game development. When the West was coding at home on Amiga and Commodore they were under commie dictatorship.

There only was a short period of time when German developers had a good time and that was the late 90s to mid 2000's. After that everything went downhill fast.

There was some sort of peak during the late 90s to late 2000s when it comes to PC gaming, with Settlers, Anno, Gothic and later Crysis but I couldn't tell you to save my live anything new since then that weren't lukewarm sequels to those or hell even any console exclusive games ever.
I'm of course talking proper games, shitty simulations, manager games, weird cash-ins and other cheap PC trash have always been plenty here.
