How is this better than, say, Unreal Tournament or Quake? Do the FPS mechanics of the game improve on the genre BEYOND just making it slower and dumber so the console tards can play with their two joysticks on a couch?

Enemy AI

From a strictly multiplayer perspective then, does the game play better than other FPS classics at all, or has it just been mangled to be playable on an xbox controller?

The game did come out on PC and Macintosh way back then.

As far as I recall it worked pretty well and had extra weapons/maps compared to the Xbox version. It also had custom edition which was an absolute blast.

better weapons, maps ,vehicles.

>trying this hard to get a rise out of Halo fans
Stop being so pathetic

I can't see how you can compare those games to halo

I'm honestly curious. People talk about this game like ti's the next coming of christ, but everything I've seen from it looks slow and boring.

it has a cool feature that i've not seen in any other fps game
the pickups (such as weapons and powerups) are physical objects, which means you can grenade them around
there are spots you can stand and grenade yourself an overshield, for example

They're both FPSes? Should I be comparing Halo to other console FPSes like Goldeneye?

it's its own thing. CE was mostly about the campaign anyway. people forget CE didn't even have online multiplayer yet.

you should judge it on its own merits instead of being autistic about the movement speed of another game and so on

comparing a new experience to a previous similar experience is basic human cognition, not a trait of autism user

Enemy ai is more complex but this doesn't make the fights better, in Quake enemies have more basic ai but more distinct quirks and attack patterns. In Halo almost every enemy is alien with gun while in quake you cannot approach a fiend the same way you would approach a shambler, vore or a squad of enforcers.

the pc version had online multiplayer

console cucks take the L again lmfao

Why compare this game to quake or unreal? It's not even trying to be the same.

you don't approach halo enemies the same way at all either

you don't get it, i'm saying you're being too rigid about what an FPS is supposed to be like based on others that have nothing to do with it instead of taking it on its own

i know and it was glorious but this guy wouldn't know

Have you ever actually played a Halo game

No, you don't get it, I'm saying an FPS design philosophy tries to achieve certain things, and Halo's main innovation to the genre was refining the experience to play well on a controller

No one gave a shit about CE on PC so Halo didn't get online MP until Halo 2 on Xbox.

unreal tournament and quake are arena fps
halo and call of duty is story+multiplayer maps
doom, duke and sam is monster mashing
counter strike is counter strike
battle royale is battle royale

dont mix them

it went well beyond playing well on a controller. it plays well period. it probably had the most engaging fights in any shooter ever in 2001. if you're going to say it's bad just explain why instead of saying it's not like such and such

halo is an arena shooter regardless of if you hate it or not

Halo's innovations were:
>Level design (well, the second mission)
>Music & Atmosphere in a FPS
>Enemy AI
>FPS that plays well on a controller
>Integrating Vehicles well in an arena FPS
>Fun physics engine
>New balance loop that many later FPS games would attempt to emulate

>get touched by warthog going 0.1 mph
>die
yeah, "fun" physics

If you compare it to later engine it's not the best yea but what was it competing against at the time? 2d physics-less FPS games? Don't forget all the fun shit made possible in it like the warthog launch challenges

the visuals were also fucking brain melting at the time. this aspect of it has somewhat been lost to time since the PC version botched it terribly and anniversary uses that version + tasteless new graphics with no atmosphere

>Level design (well, the second mission)
>Music & Atmosphere in a FPS
>Enemy AI

Halo didn't "innovate" these lmfao

yeah you're really down to pedantry now aren't you

i just find it annoying sometimes in mp because the warthog handles terribly

wow halo didn't invent first person shooters that's crazy bro i can't believe it we should all just play doom over and over again
