How would you make a viking(literally translates to raider or pirate) protagonist the hero while sticking to the truth? It has never worked for pirate characters either. You have to be extremely selective with most of the character to make him anything but a ruthless psycho rapist and murderer.

Is this the second time where the "underdogs" of history are portrayed as villains in AssCreed? The only other time I can think of is how they presented the Ottomans as benevolent rulers in Constantinople, and the conquered Greek Byzantines as the true threat to freedom.

Easy, look at how the tv show Vikings did it.
The protagonists are all unapologetically ruthless psycho rapists and murderers, and it worked fine for them.
There's no point on trying to sugar coat it.
And even in Black Flag the pirate crew are never painted to be morally right or upstanding.

I don't know why they're even trying to portray the Vikings as sympathetic. Everybody loved the protag from Black Flag and he had no problem slitting throats for money and prestige.
