To be fair, Alola is a beautiful region that was severely underutilized with lack of long routes, blocked areas and almost no dungeons. Then you have the Ultra Dimensions in USUM that could have been some amazingly cool dungeons and areas to explore but they were nothing but glorified hallways. Remember the temple behind Pheromosa in the Ultra Desert? We're never exploring that. The region suffered a lot from GF's laziness and not even USUM managed to fix the feeling of incompleteness that Gen 7 overall left.
At least it gave me new favorite Pokemon and some of the best Pokegirls in the entire series, but that doesn't justify how barebones the whole generation was.
