Are there any games where this isn't true? Every prequel I've seen for games I've played had a bunch of retcons, and it was more like a remake with just enough alterations for most people to not realize it's basically the same story again. I've also never seen one with a story that wasn't worse than the original.

Prequels always suck because they still have to write around the fact that everything has to build-up to the originals. There's also the problem with spectacle, where even though it's a prequel, everything appears more technologically advanced than the original, because the shit from the original isn't impressive anymore and chronology be damned.
