It makes it seem like you have made progress or gotten something special when it doesnt look mundane, and you need to make equipment seem worth acquiring in every regard in games where looting is a key element of gameplay.

Look at GW2 where you can customize armour colors and shit, most people make some awful looking combination of fluorescent colors and glowing effects on everything, like, there are things that look good in these games, its just that the majority of players are these autists with no sense of fashion or aesthetic, they want the shiniest thing available to make themselves seem "not boring, like making a Sonic OC that has tattoos and glowing eyes aswell as being either all black because blackis cool, or vivid colors where it looks like a visual assault. MMOs are mostly played by autists so this will not change.
