I got as far as the Pteranodon level way back than, I honestly forgot about the game until I saw AVGN. Perhaps I should play on the emulator and finish the game.

I loved the welcome to the machine level as a kid. I thought I was so cool for doing it all.
I love Ecco's mood and atmosphere, but it feels like fucking shit to play.

The controls see fluid and proper to me mate
Early 80s and Ecco was always one of those games I could never get through like Flashback and Shadowrun
At first I just thought it wasa "dolphin simulator" and I had tons of fun swimming around chatting to the lads in the first area
Only realised a year or two later there was more to the game than that
Still fucking incredible game it is, go emulate it and try to play through, it's so much fun

Think James ever had the mental capacity necessary to make it past 'The Machine' and encounter the Vortex Queen? The 'jump scare' at the start of the game pales in fucking comparison to that holy terror.

AVGN is wrong on the DC game. It's good, and actually terrifying. DC Ecco is the scariest game I've ever played.

Here's a gift for being a kind lad, it was drawn in /i/ many years ago.
Same. I unironically enjoyed it a ton but the controls were ass and NOTHING was explained they just threw you in these big open 3d areas that you had to navigate with janky controls and no idea what to do. I remember a few areas where i got stuck because i simply didn't know what i needed to do to progress.
My memory might be a little fuzzy though and i haven't played it in over a decade so i may just be remembering it wrong.

I had some experience with The Tides of Time.
I never actually played it legit but I used cheats that I found in Tips and Tricks magazine (anyone remember that?) as a kid and saw some of the end-game content and it spooked the fuck out of me as a kid with all the aliens and shit. Goddamn the atmosphere of that game is good. I should try playing it again for real this time on emulator now that I'm an adult.
The glyphs told you what you had to do in every level.
