It's not as simple. Only killing a person is "hunged". Inanimate objects, even when they represent humans, are "hung". So it can be argued that the hat character hung itself because it is inanimate despite having a name like "Dave". But "Dave hanged himself" is still more likely usage because the hat is presented as animate in the cartoon.
