In-lore they're artificial intelligences designed to monitor the development of humanity and grow and evolve based on their desires and needs. Blades didn't use to come ready with a weapon once awakened but they eventually evolved to do so through their interactions with humanity over the millenia. 500 years before the events of the game, usually Blades fought with their own weapons alongside their Drivers (the human that awakened them), but eventually it was discovered that Blades could better protect their Drivers' lives by lending them their weapons and focusing on a support role, shielding them from attacks and such, while accumulating the Ether energy expelled by their Drivers' use of Arts, special battle techniques, then releasing the accumulated energy in powerful Special Arts. So that's the reason why in Xenoblade 2, the Driver (Rex, Nia, Tora, etc.) will be on the front line, using the Blade's weapon, as the Blade itself hangs back and uses stat boosting Blade Arts, only switching back in the frontline for Special attacks.

Perun is weird, she's basically an emergency blade that you pull out when everyone else dies since she makes you a fucking tank despite being an attacker.
I think, on occasion, she's actually forced a swap-out when one of my party members dies. It's pretty cool actually

NG+ is such a fucking joke. you just 1 shot everything with all the endgame gear you come with. closest thing to a 'challenge' is to set your level under by 10 or 20 so enemies actually have a chance of killing you. wish i never overrode my OG save with this NG+ shit

But there's a lot of content exclusive to NG+. If you want challenge before post game or the arena you can make your own by downleveling yourself and setting the difficulty to bringer of chaos or whatever you want.
