None of the known leakers heard about him. It was always Minecraft and Ryu Hayabusa.

Leakers actually bought into the 5chan leak because it had Steve, Erdrick and Ryu in it. Characters they have all heard about. The leak was fake at the end of the day, however the leakers did hear about those characters, and now it's confirmed that two of the three are in.
It seems that Vergeben finally got real informations on one game. It's hard to argue that he is full or shit now. However Ryu is a fucking weird choice. Would have expected Crash before him.

Vergeben didn't mention talk about any other character except Sephiroth that was mentioned a lot. However that was at the time that the Square character wasn't confirmed. At the moment, the only real character he clearly heard about is Ryu Hayabusa. The one closer is Sephiroth but he was part of the 7 rumored square characters at the time Hero from DQ wasn't revealed.

I can't say I give a shit about him beyond being yet another classic NES character. Dude's just a ninja with a funky walk cycle, not anything particularly new to the roster. His moveset would be 90% taken from the original trilogy.

True, it might be for a potential FP3, especially since we know there were 16 slots open and even when FP2 is complete, we'll still have 4 slots left. But FP2 won't be over until 31st of December 2021 at the earliest. While it's possible I find it more likely that Ryu will be in FP2. It's not a huge character as Steve, it shouldn't be as difficult to get him in.

Everyone and their mom with their fake leaks said steve would get added because the game is so popular. I'd hardly call any of it legitimate just because after being wrong for so long it eventually happened. It's like predicting an earthquake and getting it wrong everyday, until years later where you're finally right.

Except Vergeben got all of his statements for Smash Ultimate right. It's no longer just one or two lucky guesses. He might be full of shit for other games but all of his statements for this one were right. No one expected Snake and Cloud to come back but he did say that, and also called Simon Belmont earlier than anyone. If you want to say he is full of shit, sure you can, but that's just denial at this point. Plus it's not like he stated who the remaining four characters were: at best we know that Ryu is in. That literally doesn't damage Smash discussion further than that.
