>I wanted to go into 3D animation (which is probably WAY more lucrative than learning Japanese). It took me years to get a job in my studied field (media, graphic design, etc), but I've been building up my skills with After Effects the past year and a half and have recently started learning Blender. Seems like the jobs usually pay better than the standard editor (over £30k a year within agencies or non-media environments), but I think having a combination of skills is where I'll be making more of my money later.
Japanese (or any second language really) will be a great help, so I'd advise keeping up with both. My parents were pretty similar in how they busted my ass constantly (despite the fact I was the first member of our family to go to and finish college) forever thinking it was still the 70s were a 12 year old could just walk into the local factory, ask for a job, and get one then and there, when the factory in my small shitty town was essentially closed down and the population is 5 times what it was.
Thankfully I managed to save up enough commission money to move to the city, but then it was a case of getting a minimum wage retail job to make rent. This was enough to both get out under their wing and get them off my ass, so I don't regret it in the least. I'd highly recommend it. Took me a long time to build up some savings and move to a better city (though this was also because I wanted to enjoy my weekends and do shit), but I got some experience and small gigs here and there to build up my portfolio and make extra cash in the meantime, and now, finally, I have a job in my chosen field. Hopefully it lasts.
So yeah, try to have some empathy for your parents. It has it's own headaches, but I don't think you'll regret being a wagie for a bit, both to shut her up and to have some cash to spend.
