Gameplay mechanics wise: Young Kratos. GOW1-3 were basically character action games. Faster, can jump and do air combos, more abilities, more rage.

Lore wise: Old Kratos. Still has all the skills but with more experience. Beat Baldr twice, with Baldr clearly being a parallel to young Kratos with his uncontrollable rage directed towards a parent who wronged him.

I just recently emulated god of war after the suffering crashed on me, and I liked some parts and disliked others. It's different from what I imagined, a lot more puzzles and walking on beams, not as many bosses. Really enjoyed the visuals though, cronos in particular felt very creative compared to all other giant lava cronoses out there.

My point being, I'm about to play gow2, what am I in for? Is there any black sheep in the series I should avoid?

2018 kratos is the better kratos, but... og kratos is much more powerfull.
The main source of Kratos power is Rage, OG Kratos is a avatar of Rage and fully embraces it, he hates and destroys, no holding back...
