Its a carry over from Japanese, where referring to yourself in the third person is used as a cutesy form of speech. It sort of works in English that way too, but I'd say it doesn't carry over quite as well.

So What is this game even? Does it have like a story, or is it just an open world with random things in it to do with the characters you spend all your money on getting?

There's about 20 hours worth of story in game right now. You need to do some exploring to get XP since quests are locked by level, making the story take 30ish hours instead. After that is pure grind as they haven't introduced the raids or an event yet.

In terms of story structure BOTW is an apt comparison.

It's a good open world coop adventure game, it has an ok story, the gameplay is about puddle deep but the elemental mechanic is pretty good, the world is pretty soulful and filled with secrets, puzzles and structures that you can get lost easily in. For the gacha part, it depends in your luck, for me i already got 12 chars without even spending a dime on and i enjoy the game alot. Try it for youself
