Yknow its funny to me. Symphonia was my all time favorite growing up and my first real RPG, but looking back, it was practically phantasia re-done, with eternia's same subplots. It was nothing new. in fact they re-treaded better tales games to make Symphonia what it was, but at the same time I feel thats why it worked: It was a love letter (and prequel) to the games that really shined in the series, and was a good way to get the west interested in them.
Hell the fact we got Legendia between it and abyss is still baffling, it was several stages behind in every department but it's music and it played like shit after the radial battle system got popularized.

I personally have no emotional connection to Lloyd since I've only started getting into Tales this year, but I can understand that feeling of disappointment towards something you love being used only as a tool to piss other people off.
For what it's worth I hope he gets in if it makes you happy. That's what Smash should be about, letting your inner child beam with joy at seeing these characters be celebrated and brought to more people.
I know I sure was happy when I saw Richter get in Smash.
