Made by Divinity devs and unlike previous BG games, it's turn based.
But contrary to retarded meme speak I see calling it a DivOS2 reskin, it plays nothing like DivOS2 beyond being turn based.
The mechanics are completely different from DivOS2 because they are D&D 5E adaptation.
Also contrary to popular belief, story IS related to the previous games.
The main theme appears to be Illithid invasion of the upper world, this was actually part of Baldur's Gate 2 plot where on your journey you pass through Underdark and an Illithid city but you just pass through it there and never resolve it, it's just a location you go through to kill shit on the way to your main objective and you can find a note how this was just a fraction of larger invasion plans for the surface they have but it never gets brought up or resolved in BG2.
This is similar to how Baldur's Gate 1 teased Neverwinter Nights where you can find an NPC escaping from Neverwinter telling you how hardcore shit is going down there with a plague destroying the city but it never gets brought up again or resolved in BG1, you had to play Neverwinter Nights for that.
Since BG2 and ToB finished its main plot in full, BG3 appears to instead continue that Illithid invasion tease plot thread instead.
Larian did however say that the plot will ramp up later on with much more blatant connections to BG1 and BG2 story, so chances are they're going to have Bhaal himself appear or something.

The way reactions/on-hit apparently work seems retarded.

All Tieflings since 4E have tails because they made them all boring Asmodean tieflings due to garbage lore changes.
Essentially Tieflings had a lot of variety but in order to streamline the PnP and appear to dumbed of dumb normies, they homogenized evreything they could not unlike WoW started doing after WotLK.
All Tieflings are now Asmodean Tieflings because Asmodeus became a god and magically transformer all tieflings into his pseudo-clones, meaning they're all now boring and identical looking with red skin, horns and tails.
D&D from 4E and onwards is a pile of shit, which is one of the reasons why I'm not looking forward to this game all THAT much. 5E is a substantial upgrade over 4E but it's still garbage compared to 3.5E

The lore is that they all became pretty red colored humans with horns and tails because of Asmodeus became a god, see Blame 4E and 5E for lorerape, not Larian.

Dwarf? Fat, short humans.
Gnomes? Short humans.
Elves? Pointy ear pretty humans.
Half-elves? Pointy ear humans.

If anything it's laughable that they don't have playable Half-Orc race since old ones did, but Swen did say they plan to have every single class and race from 5E Player's Handbook in the game if nothing fucks up in development, so they'll just get added later.
