How did LoL manage to steal the thunder of DotA 2? You'd think the later getting to keep the original name, having in their ranks the original creator and the latest developer, being sponsored by Valve/Steam, etc would be bigger.
I can't think of a single time something like this has happened before. Imagine, I don't know, by the time Valve was about to release TF2 some indie studio managed to release "Faction Bastion" and got far more popular.
What did Valve do wrong?
How did LoL manage to steal the thunder of DotA 2? You'd think the later getting to keep the original name...
league was more streamlined and easier to understand, the majority will always be casual players.
You are practically a decade late for thus discussion .
Dota is harder to get into than League
one is a mostly faithful redo of an old classic and has a reputation for being hard to get into
the other is dumbed down extremely to appeal to the lowest common demoninator
it's no surprise only one of them hit the big time
Holy shit, now that I think about it, you are right, lol literally mogged dota
>International rakes more and more money per year.
Did you forget Blizzard, they are the only ones that made a giant mistake, both LoL and Dota2 are very profitable.
>You'd think the later getting to keep the original name, having in their ranks the original creator and the latest developer
irrelevant to 99% of the current playerbase)
it might have helped gain initial players, but chances are those initial players also knew what LoL was because it was niche
League is more popular imo because
>more skill based and less knowledge based makes it more accessible
>better character designs, that are more grounded/anime making them more relatable/acceptable
>while also having better character designs, it also is better at appealing to fantasy (something that 80% of game devs don't seem to understand) Want the fantasy lord of death? Aatrox. Cowboy? Jhin with skin, Dragon, Anime girl, Kpop, spartan, ghost, demon, angel, etc
>free, this is self explanatory
30-40 million prize pool for the international for last 5 years.
LoL can't even crack 3 million in any prize pool ever.
Hmmm
this is why is play league
Well sure, Blizzard was stupid not to learn from Valve's practices of 'buying' modder talent (tf, portal, alien swarm although that went nowhere). And then got mad when Valve actually did so. HotS is irrelevant compared to the other two, HoN is dead, and there were dozens of DoA standalone dota clones.
But still, I feel like Valve must have done something wrong to get the short end of the stick.
How much money would they rake if they had 10 times the playerbase?
This is not a thread against or in favour of one game or the other, btw.
also I didn't mention it but
t. played dota in warcraft
>More skill based.
Rest is bullshit too.
Dota requires high IQ, LoL doesn't.
Valve paying more and more per year
dota takes hundreds of hours just to be decent I have 70 hours and I literally have won maybe 4 games out of the tens I've played
It’s easier, it has waifus, and the gacha grind it addictive
Because Valve can't unironically do games anymore, Dota 2 is just a gambling simulator that's only balanced around being an e-sport and spectator sport rather than a fun game being played.
Valve doesn't deserve the Dota IP
aagggg tmra calla reconchaturamare
yeah, high IQ
Updates
Constantly adding new characters
Good/pandering marketing
Less punishing gameplay, less requirement of socially interacting with people or facing issues with role queue
What do you think will happen if Riot did the same thing?
A lot more. Shit gives hats and those can do a pretty coin on steambux.
Leveling the entire thing isn't doable as f2p since grind get unbearable pretty soon.
527180540
well mr avatar fag, why do you think LoL is objectively more popular then
Why do you think Valve did something wrong? You said it yourself:
>HotS is irrelevant compared to the other two, HoN is dead, and there were dozens of DoA standalone dota clones.
If they did anything wrong Dota2 would be part of the dozen or so failed Dota clones.
LoL has more fun and satisfying gameplay. In terms of responsiveness and speed of your character, Dota 2 feels like an RTS whereas LoL feels like Diablo.
dota 2 has lots of whales who funnel money into the season pass each year, and sure it prints money, but lol has a lot more world wide importance and riot has made a huge effort in creating local esports communities all over the world, which gives them a lot of marketing.
If valve gave 10% of the effort that riot gives into having a good competitive scene, dota would probably be the most viewed game on twitch AND the most played, but they are lazy as fuck and got overtaken.
nowadays dota has much less players and importance than it did years ago, even if TI makes more money each year, it's partly because they put more and more rewards into the battle pass (this year alone they gave 2 personas and 4 arcanas, which is unheard of), but the gameplay and meta has gotten worse and more stale for each year. LoL has 1 major season patch and around 15 or more small balance patches, but Dota 2 has 1 major patch and like 4 or 5 small patches a year, right now the meta feels like shit.
Dota 2 is getting closer and closer into ded game status simply because Valve doesn't do shit, they don't create a good experience for new players and the community is dog shit, the worst I know desu. In SEA you have pinoys, in America you have peruvians and in Europe you have russians.
it's the better game
thats actually the most accurate description I've seen
No idea about Riot but Dota is a Valve game. And Valve approach is always the same, the 'community' should work on the game while us, valve, from time to time release a patch or fix a bug report (only the ones reported on reddit). After all, when you contact support about dota... the answer and solution is "make a reddit thread about it".
LoL gets fucking boring once you do ranked and all the games feel the same and then you get smurfs and your team just can't help but feed them also there is no come backs if you are afk for like 2 minutes at the start then its pretty much game.
Lowest common denominator pseudo-weaboo garbage, that's how. Weaboo enough to be appealing to the mouthbreathers, not weaboo enough to be completely embarrassing to the general consumer.
Oh, and it's braindead like a mobile game
It's literally proto-Overwatch in that sense.
One thing, soul
same can be exactly said on dota but much harsher?
Now that I think of it, Valve has had hard flops since, like Artifact and Underlords. So it could have done much, much worse. You are right, it is at the top, sharing place with another game.
I just find it difficult to understand how it failed to be #1.
