Mario, Metroid, and Kirby are like Nintendo's holy trinity. I have a lot of respect for Kirby, the series never really strayed from what makes it great, but takes tons of risks with cool new gameplay styles. Has godlike music, cool characters and universe. The quality of the games never really had that dip long running series had.

Nightmare in Dreamland played better than the original game though.
Yes, some of the stage assets were not comparable to the original with the backgrounds, but Kirby's controls were the best they had ever been in NiD, Amazing Mirror, and Squeak Squad. Then Kirby started getting a bit more sluggish again with Super Star Ultra and RtD.
