while they monetize some add-ons on the game, most add-ons are free and can be found on the internet. The ones on the minecraft store is simply monetized by the creators of those add-ons.

They aren't killing Java, they update Java before bedrock. They even updated Java's menu window so it's easier to catagorize and download mods.

Creeper wasn't a placeholder, it was a mistake. Notch got the Y and Z coordinates confused when modeling the pig, and it created the Creeper shape. People thought it should be added in as its own unique mob, and it stuck.
