why shouldn't I just get a gaming laptop for pc gaming?

The display especially. There's nothing wrong with getting a gaymen laptop just don't make it your primary.

You will hate the air coming out at 100°C and the need to plug it to get consistent framerate

It'll be hot, loud and the GPU is underclocked. You unlikely to make the most of that 1080p 120hz screen unless you're playing older games. If that doesn't bother you then go ahead.

Well if you really need portability you should get one. In general though you're going to be paying around $300 extra for a laptop equivalent of an equally powerful desktop so you have to decide if that's worth it for you.

Everything in this thread, plus:

>can't upgrade parts easily or at all in most cases
>laptop heat will shorten parts lifespans

I have a GX701 with an RTX 2070 in there and I'm pretty happy.

laptops
>portable
>loud as fuck
>less powerful

desktops
>cheaper
>can up easily upgraded

>10-20 bucks

Does it magically improve the airflow and reduce temps by 40C?

If the laptop designers weren't retarded enough not to put wents on the bottom, then it's about as good as a much more expensive cooling pad.

You just posted why it is a bad idea.

I honestly think the time I spent playing games on my laptop made me infertile. Having that hot ass thing on my lap for hours just fried both my balls.

you put it on a table you fucking moron

This is the one I have, Zephyrus G14. Ryzen 9 and a 2060 (gimped mobile versions, of course). Can get 10 hours battery life when not gaming. 14" and relatively inconspicuous (no giant red eyes or plastic fan grills) so I feel comfortable using it for non gaming tasks in public.

I have this laptop but the 1650 version and it's fucking fantastic.

Asus is the one gaming laptop brand I trust.

Well, I also trust Alienware but that's super overpriced.

Related question. My sister started a software engineering degree and only has a Mac. She asked me to recommend a non Mac laptop to her as she needs it to run certain programs. Any recommendations? She doesn't really care about games apart from civ.

Any basic bitch Lenovo or Dell should suffice. Microsoft Surface laptops if she likes it.

I don't really know anything about software engineering but would any programs used require a good CPU and GPU?

probably not, a half decent cpu should be enough

decent CPU and ram, at least 16gb honestly I'd hate to do anything in a bloated IDE (which they will make her use) with low ram

Because you can accomplish a similar/better build that can actually be upgraded for like $3-400 if you build a pc.

thermal throttling, lower power draw, worse performance on a card that is already not very high end, paying 700$ for 400-500$ worth of hardware. There's a lot of reasons not to buy one but if you're a casual college kid with no current setup then go for it just plan for a dead system 3 years in

why the fuck do they call it a LAPtop then retard?

Girls don't study software engineering

>retards still buy laptops for home use

Personally I hate playing on a laptop keyboard and track pads are pretty inconvenient as well. You can plug in a controller/keyboard/mouse but that just makes the whole thing that much less portable and ruins the point to a degree. If you are just going to keep the thing docked on your desk you may as well just get a proper desktop computer and either save some money or get some better hardware.

What software engineering related applications don't work on mac but do on windows? You need WSL or cygwin to program on windows, all those things should work better on a mac.

>shit mobile gpu
>upgrade? lol
that's why

>Have multiple monitors, my headphones, separate keyboard and mouse for the home workstation
>meet up with friends and coworkers to game/get some work done? No problem
>disconnect the laptop and take it away

Feels good man

Just install windows on Bootcamp/VM, bit pointless to buy another laptop.

this would be great if more laptop fags actually left their houses but they all end up just using the thing like a desktop, it's so strange

>"Hey man, you need help?"
>"Don't touch me you filthy casual."

Depends, if you're going to put your laptop at home and portability isn't your reason for going laptop, you're just wasting money on inferior specs

Also keep in mind the naming scheme can be deceiving, especially Nvidia's who stopped using the M suffix in their mobile GPUs, like 980M. A laptop that is expensive as hell that has a RTX 2080 will not have a desktop RTX 2080 GPU performance, not even close. Some people have reported it's actually closer to a 2060, so if you were to do price comparisons you can't compare it to a desktop 2080 for starters.

Now if you really are on the move all the time, you work traveling or whatever it is, you might not have a choice if you want PC gaming but cannot really settle for a desktop experience which will be better

Techlet here, are laptops better or worse in terms of cost compared to the sum of their components for an equivalent PC? I was always under the impression that they're cheaper but all the recent shitposting about prebuilts made me wonder if it's the same for laptops.

no upgrades.
thermal throttling.

>1600 series on 2020
>1600 series on a laptop in 2020
Dude no...
If you have to buy a gayming laptop wait for next year when new architextures will be dropped.

Dunno. I work in pharmaceuticals so don't really know much about computers. She just sent me message saying she needs non Mac laptop to do her assignments

laptops are always overpriced for their hardware, even the best deal you can find is going to be much cheaper to build as a desktop. You're paying for portability, branding and convenience

I bought a 1650 Super earlier this year since my GTX 660Ti died, I needed a replacement and everything else was out of stock.

Unless you are getting some heavily discounted shit laptops are generally a lot more expensive than an equivalent PC.

worse, you pay a premium for the form factor, they have very limited cooling capacity compared to a mid tower therefore throttling and underclocked parts to keep temps down is a reality in laptops, there will be compromises when it comes to shit like screen response times and such.

Very high spec laptops are way more expensive than desktops with equivalent specs, but then you can't have the portability of the laptops even with a small form factor, mini ITX desktop build so depends on what the user needs really. Some who are on the move constantly but still want PC gayman might be ok with a performance loss and paying a premium for the ability to move things around much quicker. There's also the issue that powerful gaming laptops do need to be plugged to a wall and on battery you'll be extremely lucky if a demanding game gets more than 2 hours from its internal battery.

Also often the laptops on battery will not run as well compared to plugging them into a wall, they'll be able to draw more power from the outlet and boost for higher clocks, so while it's portable you'll often find yourself having to use it plugged to a power outlet if you're playing a lot of games on it, unless you're satisfied with light 2D games or so such as Terraria or Spelunky 2 or such
