Liyue vs Mondstad was the real SOUL vs soulless. Why didn't they start us off there instead of generic european castle city we've seen thousands of times before? Liyue was almost everything I would want from Breath of the Wild 2's overworld. All the talk of them reusing the old Hyrule map needs to end unless they're doing multiple regions too. The bar has been raised significantly. They can't just go back after this.

It really has, and I'm not one to say that lightly. I still like BOTW more overall but the level geometry in Liyue makes Hyrule's mountains look like a joke.

OP here. The gacha system is indeed trash, and I won't defend it. I'm just commenting on the environment really.

Because it's safer to start in Europe.
I can see China being a turn-off if it's the starting region.

Yeah, and the great thing about Liyue is that it just isn't about mountains and peaks. That's just one aspect of it. There's many varied landscapes and distinct landmarks that make it memorable like with the rice paddy farming village, the mining towns, the ruins, the marshlands with the giant tree hotel. And it tops it all off with the city of Liyue itself right near the end of it, like a jewel encrusted exclamation mark on a gauntlet being thrown down in challenge.

Man, I wish this was a full retail game instead of gacha, like you gain characters and weapons from sidequests and exportation. Although I bet the reactions would be different and many people would call it botw ripoff even more.

That is true. It's a shame too, because they put so much more love and care into China than Europe. A lot of people might get turned off from the game's gacha mechanics or the mediocrity of the first area before they ever get to experience it in all its majesty.

BotW is very vertical in a lot of places, but many parts of the world were meant to be traversed on horseback. Unfortunately in GI moving vertically is also way more of a pain than it is in BotW
