How come these guys make games that stick with you for a lifetime and you remember the music, level design, story etc. even after decades? How can we in the West become like them?
Japan
japanese games are made by people who respect and enjoy gaming as a medium.
w*stern """games""" are made by hacks who would rather be making movies, or tv shows, or books, or "art," or political campaign advertisements.
Its actually very simple
Target demographics
They arent trying to make games for the entire world to like so they are allowed to put in more niche things in it, its like american movies so diluted and brainless because they chase the lowest denominator possible
Japan mostly makes games for Japanese people first who are an ethnic group with high IQ, good education level and a common culture so you are allowed to do more interesting stuff
because only the best stuff makes it westward. japan is the king of shovelware.
>an ethnic group with high IQ, good education level and a common culture
That can't be it, plenty of nations with similar conditions (take Germany for instance) who are nowhere near as capable at creating video games. Must be something in the water over in Japan
what is Doom
>Japan mostly makes games for Japanese people
you RETARD
jap consumers have shit taste
Germany doesnt have much of a videogame creating culture, in fact they are pretty lousy when it comes to art in most forms
Because you don't feel the same sort of exoticism towards things you're culturally familiar with
>germany is lousy at art
you what mate
It's not really "Japan." It's a handful of companies in Japan, particularly Nintendo and Bandai Namco. Then you have Capcom but they're more hit or miss. Unsurprisingly Bamco also works frequently with Nintendo. So it really is largely Nintendo lifting the Japanese game industry up. And the reason they're able to do that is because they are a very old very conservative company that thinks in the long term. They are even based in Kyoto instead of Tokyo, the old capital of Japan. They are a company that has been around for more than a hundred years, and they intend to still be around in another hundred. So they make sure that their games are high quality so that people will still want to buy games in these franchises 20 30 or 50 years from now. If Japan didn't have Nintendo and Nintendo's partners it probably wouldn't be any better at making games than Korea for example.
Germany please stop stealing Austrian artists for yourself.
Japan blatantly rips off the West.
>Final Fantasy has been ripping off Star Wars and Dungeons and Dragons for decades
>Metal Gear Solid rips off spy thrillers like James Bond
>Resident Evil rips of Western Zombie genre
>Castlevania rips off vampire literatrue which is Western
and so on. I will give them this, they are competent enough to add a twist or two, add nice presentation, flashy graphics and amazing music etc. But the core ideas remain Western.
that's one of the few things they are still good at
their cinema is trash now, music too (only a few conductors like maasaki suzuki)
so of course they would try to be as good as possible at it
Yeah they do but that applies to the entire world, most people are just casuals and want to get on with their days and maybe play some games here and there sometimes, but even accounting for that and their gambling problem they still produce the most interesting stuff even if said stuff remains niche.
If you were to make a list of the 100 most influential and interesting Japanese games of all time what percentage do you think would be made by Nintendo? It's not Japan that's great at producing great games, it's Nintendo. Similarly high quality games in the west tend to be made by a handful of companies like bethesda while most western video game companies shove out trash.
They were never good at live action cinema other than those couple famous directors which were outliers.
Their music has been amazing and continues to be though, its a paradise for independent quality music
>w*stern """games""" are made by hacks who would rather be making movies, or tv shows, or books, or "art," or political campaign advertisements.
Actually, it's more often that they're made by soulless corporations who just want to churn out generic AAA #12543509234922340800982347681. It's all about money.
Western games would unironically be better if they were made by the wannabe-auters you described.
Well, Japan was somewhat unique in its postwar boom and sphere of American influence in Asia. The reason Japanese electronics and software were available to North American consumers en mass was because of this relationship.
Japan puts a lot of time and effort into their games. It's the same idea as a lot of Asian nations, they'll work long hours and hammer away at something to make a really nice product (Yeah, even China did this once upon a time). On the flipside, they will often use old, inefficient methods because they are hardly ever willing to innovate.
The US and the west as a whole are the complete opposite. The west only cares about pushing the theory behind things, they'll develop revolutionary game engines, highly optimized network architecture, and tons of back end things that people never see and take for granted, but when it comes to putting together the finishing touches, everyone just shrugs their shoulders and half asses the rest of it. This is why most notable western games are technological marvels but not always that fun to play; the best examples the west has are flawed masterpieces, outside of a few notable examples like DOOM.
Instead of trying to make the west be like Japan, we need to combine the greatest aspects of each: a western studio to handle engine development and solving the riddles of optimization; and a Japanese studio to pour their hearts into polishing the game. I believe this is the recipe for a perfect game, and the only thing stopping it is purely an ego thing.
There would be tons of Sega, Capcom, Atlus, Square and thats before going for the obscure stuff like flor de lic on that list.
a lot of great japanese franchises came from appealing to the west
see resident evil
With how much Western game devs like these movie type games how feasible would a legit movie type game be? Sort of like those netflix style CYOA style shit.
Resident evil is a remake/reimagining of Sweet home, yes it has western influences but it was born from japanese horror storytelling
>w*stern """games""" are made by hacks who would rather be making movies, or tv shows, or books, or "art," or political campaign advertisements.
Why don't they then?
>Mozart
>Germany
stobb id
Austrians are Germans though
Austrians are Bavarians.
Didn't Germany get overrun by sandniggers? Western countries are all equally fucked and creatively bankrupt on top of it.
Why do they bitch so much that Japan doesn't allow the same?
Stop believing everything you read on Zig Forums, retard
They just released this game
They dont care if a genre is "outdated" they will still produce quality on old gameplay systems and I really like that you can tell they just really just wanted to make this and they werent chasing any trends.
Modern Western games don't focus on the story or soundtrack anymore. It's all about Battle Passes and level ups and skins and whatnot. And the modern Western games that DO try to focus on the story just feel like generic summer blockbuster rejects, that take it way too far and barely feel like games. Also, Western games feel too "quippy" now, like everyone needs that Marvel audience.
Japanese games still take that "theatric", dramatic approach to storytelling and soundtrack, and it feels different. Maybe you get the silly overly edgy guy and the peppy big-titted klutz a lot, but still, I prefer those over literally every Western character being a walking quip-spouter.
