Tesla appeals to "nerds" because he had high points in intelligence but low points in social (never had a girl friend) and many of his grandiose ideas were held back by others for being too ambitious so he has the underdog effect going for him. He in general has a huge myth around him like the story about the police allegedly storming into his home because he made a resonating device that shook buildings or activating a machine that caused a generator miles away to burst into flames. Are these stories true? Nah, but stories like that make him interesting for steampunk and dieselpunk settings which are known for having wacky devices.
Can't say about Lovecraft. I'd say people who like Tesla vastly out number Lovecraft fans.
