What video games do you consider ‘high art’?
What video games do you consider ‘high art’?
Certainly not Mario Sunshine

The Pikmin series
came here to post this but with definitely instead of certainly

Killer7, Super Metroid, Dark Souls, Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Hollow Knight. Games where not only is there a story, but the gameplay itself Is kind of a story. Take Ocarina for example. The game is very easy and straightforward when you're child Link. But the game gets more complex and difficult when you're Adult Link. In fact, the first dungeon with keys, a Zelda staple, doesn't even appear until the Forest temple. Even if these games aren't perfect (And no game will ever be), they express their ideas and stories in a way that could really only work the way it does as a video game.
The Mario Strikers series

No. Death Stranding or Metal Gear Solid 4 are too afraid to be video games, and wants to be a fart-huffer's "Epic cinematic experience". If we're going to talk about Video games that show the artistic potential of video games, it shouldn't be video games that just want to be $60 movies. Pretty much any modern Sony funded game can fall under this category.
But I wouldn't call the majority of super basic Retro/Nintendo/Indie stuff "artistic" either, the kind of stuff where Game play is the only focus, story, greater meaning or themes be damned. A balance is needed.
t. never played Death Stranding
Oh sure, let me "Play" Walking forward, pressing LT and RT to balance, and watch some Monster Energy product placement.

Explain to me why you guys hate Sunshine so much.

Can confirm. I 100% Sunshine two weeks ago and its certainly isn't 'high art', hardly 'art' even.
I have more validity than most sunshine fags who just play through the 7 episodes per level, maybe go for the 8th shine if they felt like it.
I certainly don't hate Sunshine. I actually really enjoy Sunshine, even with acknowledgement to the flaws. But "High Art"? No way, I already gave what I think a pretty good answer in and to what kind of games would be closest to high art. Mario Sunshine is good at delivering fun, enjoyable gameplay, but that's the only thing it's sometimes good at
>here's your 120 shines reward, bro
Probably my least favorite part of the game. Mario 64 had such a cool combo of Sparkly Jump+Castle Cannon+Yoshi+Bower Dialogue+Fat Penguin that even though no one reward is that great, the whole package is always great to get. And honestly, if you're not playing Mario 64 to 100%, you're not really playing Mario 64.
Sunshine was and still is a bad game
Your childhood doesn't change that
None because games are games not art imbecile.
Are you gonna call twister or hide n seek art too?
It's less about the reward for me and more about the overall adventure. 64 didnt have a great reward either but I never cared, getting the 120 stars was a very worthwhile experience. Getting all the blue coins in Sunshine was fucking awful, their placements are pretty solid for the most part (remind me a lot of moons from Odyssey), but some of them are actually horseshit. Specifically the ones that are so fucking obscure or nonsensical like spraying an incospicuous sign in Pianta Village or blue coins that are placed DELIBERATELY away from the current level's objective. Going for 100% in Sunshine really shines just how truly unpolished the game is.

I think the ones that pissed me off the most was the one in Ricco Harbor where you literally spray a completely non-distinct wall, The Pianta Village sign, and the one in Sirena Beach hotel where you spray a wall in one of the hotel rooms during the red coin mission with really strict time limits.
None because I'm not a faggot that needs to have his hobby validated as important by society.
Games are games, and art is a completely meaningless definition.
