It's just a nice satisfying microcosm of the level 1 to endgame MMO experience bottled up into 30-45 minute pvp matches. You start at level one, you start out killing weak mobs to level up and gear your character, and as you get more and more leveled and built you start killing players and stronger mobs and pushing through the map.
It has all the appeal of getting powerful and building your character that you get from an MMO, but everyone starts from 1 at the same time so if you do it fast and efficiently you get the satisfaction of being able to dominate people since you're the strongest one in the map. That element isn't really present in an MMO unless you play on a fresh server and nolife it, but even then it's not like you're playing a match you can win or lose so your power advantage is just to screw around and bully people.
Dota is better though

Most MOBAs are fundamentally broken by trying to do 3 things at once.
>1v1 skillshot battle game where outplays and mechanics decide fights
>Isometric RTS that allows you to pick between classes who start strong vs. gradually grinding resources for late game, while using Fog of War and formations to pick good fights for your point-and-click attacks
>Resource-based team battle where a single strong player snowballs in power, while a player who's behind can coordinate with teammates to create traps
Any two of these could work, but trying to be all three will always lead to unfixable problems.
If doesn't matter how good your mechanics are if one person can click you to death and their teammates prevent you from going for other objectives.
It doesn't matter how good your overarching strategy is if you have to make 25 correct reads in a row to survive your lane.
It doesn't matter how far ahead you get when the game's mechanics forcibly leash you back to give lategame characters a chance.

It's a good mix of strategy and skill, allowing players who have a different mix play-styles, strengths, and ideas on what's best. Overhead action games that aren't grindfest diablo clones are rare. Also the pacing of somewhat slow paced laning into chaotic objective fights, where your character gets stronger as you go using different build paths.
