The version of melee people use to play online doesn't have very much actually going on.
Rollback in ultimate would have to include client-side prediction for not only up to four players characters, but also any items on the stage. The complexity required just to satisfy compfags isn't worth it in my opinion.

Because rollback works like complete fucking shit on anything that isnt 1v1 on static stages, while delay based works much better when taken into account items on, moving stages and more than two fighters

dude, rollback is just another name for client side prediction. It's a netcode standard made by first person shooters. it's literally designed to work with more than two people, it just happens to be the optimal netcode for fighting games

This. I wish rollback was in but I think there's just too many elements too keep in sync, as opposed to just two fighters
every online shooter known to man uses rollback. smash is baby shit compared to the chaos going on in a game like tf2, with 20+ players
I play 2 game modes with 6 stages and mostly no items.
Ultimate is a product with different priorities and a different market in mind. Support for 4 player online item matches that are presentationally identical to offline play if paramount.
99% of bad predictions and rollbacks in an FPS will not be seen or felt by any one player, due to how am FPS match is designed and structured. Every single rollback will be seen and impact all players in a Fighting game.
That's not an excuse for not doing it, but the problem is nonetheless different.
