There's just no way they could hit the insane PS5 SSD speeds without soldering. Any plastic adapter would have been at risk like it was put in a microwave.

While these SSD are bound to fail eventually, their lifespan is gonna be really long. My system SSD is just 120 GB and after 5 years it used only a quarter of its resource.

The problem isn't the lifespan in general, it's that it's lifespan is going to be shit since it is soldered to the main board and will likely be sandwiched between components. These fucking SSD's are going to bake and degrade much faster than normal.

While outright failure isn't really to be expected, given Sony's cuntishness with previous consoles, I fully expect the reason they soldered them to the main board is some hardware DRM check against them which will fail once they begin to degrade.

It's a good thing no computer ever deletes or modifies files as part of its normal operation that it does while running in the background without user input
And it's a REALLY good thing we can trust every developer to develop rock solid installation and patching processes that don't write, delete and rewrite files excessively to save themselves difficulty in developing the tools

I had to replace my ps3 hdd before the ps4 came out, and definitely noticed it starting to fail before it died.

I've owned literally every Sony system starting from the PS1, and if they don't fix these design issues in the upgraded version of the console, I'll be switching to Xbox.
