In the past in Japan, Sony diehards were called "GK", which was short for "Gate Keeper" (ゲートキーパー・ジーケー). The origin referred to a proxy server used by Sony and its various companies. So, if the proxy address "gatekeeper.sony.co.jp" appeared above a bulletin board comment, then a Sony employee might have made the comment (Gokipedia has examples from the early part of this century).
That's why Sony fanboys and fangirls started being dubbed "GK" online in Japan, with the implication that they "worked" for the electronics giant. Prior to this, Sony fans were called "Degawa" (出川) after an annoying comedian, Tetsuro Degawa, wore a PlayStation 2 shirt on television. Degawa is not cool, and by association, the term suggested that Sony fans weren't either.
The "GK" derogatory term, however, evolved into "GK no furi" (GKの振り), which means "GK behavior". That term then also evolved into "GK-buri" (GKブリ), which can mean "GK-esque" and looks kind of like "gokiburi" (ゴキブリ), the Japanese word for "cockroach." And thus, Sony fans had a new mean moniker.
This has been known for a long time, newfags. People pointed out the cockroach thing when Fester was spamming the board so much.

I don't know much Japanese, but why is 'gokiburi' spelled in Katakana instead of Hiragana? I thought Kata was used for loan words
It's up to the author, there's really no strict rules regarding what has to be written in hiragana and what in katakana. Writing a noun in katakana is something that's pretty common if it has no kanji/they're not common.
Jonathan Perez
It's also used for a variety of names for plants, animals etc Not only loan words, the common use is loan words but not limited to that.

Katakana is also used for onomatopoeia and sometimes for animals, gokiburi is one of those.
The reason why GKの振り became GKブリ and why they would prefer to write gokiburi in katakana in this case is because it's also used to give a "special feeling" to a word and call attention to it, especially if the word has an alternate meaning.
For example, the word あそこ means "over there" or kind of like "some place you know but I won't mention". It's used as a euphemism for genitals too, like "private parts" in English. If someone in Japanese wanted to specify they don't mean "over there" but actually the meaning "private parts" they might write it as アソコ instead, so there's no question what they mean. It's kind of like using emphasis quotes in English - take the difference between the sentences:
Disneyland is a really special place. They touched me in my "special place".
Notice how even though you can tell from context what kind of special place we mean, the quotes still feel appropriate since they make the meaning in the second sentence 100% obvious. That's the kind of thing that's happening with "katakana-izing" words.

Welcome to 15+ years ago. How is this just now coming to light when this was common knowledge over a decade ago?
I figured they would be called roaches because of that tendency for cockroaches to live inside ps4s
Isaiah Richardson
why is it in katakana if it's a native word? retarded chinks
Logan Ortiz
I like cockroaches but I don’t like sony.

Honest? If you could read my posts when I was discussing here FFXIII going to 360, you'd say >Jesus fucking christ, is that even the same person at all? I would trade my soul burning in hell for 1000 years just to see Sony go out of business
It's not a native word, Japanese exported "gokiburi" from Chinese, 公气菲立 (gong-qi-fei-li). Initially it was the name of the particular Chinese that interacted with Japanese at that time, but in time and for some reason it took the "cockroach" meaning.

That explains quite a lot. Thank you, user.

Always thought Zig Forums used the word because of the PS4 roach motel design. Didn't even know it was a nip thing. interesting.
>Degawa is not cool I'm more interested on this one. Anyone knows why? From what I've seen he's a pretty big comedian, he's on TV a lot, but overall pretty chill looking dude, also he seems friendly to other geinins and entertainer.
