It's not that bad at all. It's basically a slightly more complex version of Poker.
I went from having no clue of what was going on to being competent enough to win some hands here and there in about a day or two.
just stick to trying to make simple hands and almost never steal from opponents unless it's the last one you need to complete your hand.
It also helps to hit the square button at the beginning of every turn if you're unsure of what kind of hand you have. If you're close to winning you can declare (riichi I think?) and the game starts to speed up until the last tile etiher shows up or everyone runs out of tiles to draw.
You may also want to keep a guide open until you memorize the numbers for the japanese makred tiles, the numbers they represent aren't as obvious as the bamboo and circles.

mahjong is just rummy but with tiles instead of a poker deck. make a hand that fulfills a "win condition" (called Yaku) and as many extra bonus conditions as you can fit before your opponents declare a win and take all the points. Yakuza Mahjong also fudges the numbers to give you easier hands than normal.
however, i don't understand why you give a damn. you completed the main story, why play the game if it's not enjoyable to you?

Getting into Mahjong is easy. Getting into Mahjong in the Yakuza games is difficult because the AI fucking cheats.

You can either get the app for your phone/tablet or play on your desktop browser. It does have a tutorial, and it makes things simple and easy to understand, but it also guides you as you play by letting you memorize which tile is which, which ones can be grouped, when you can steal a tile, when you can win, etc. After a while you learn the rules subconsciously.

Brute force it by never taking any tile and never put one down. Focus on collecting three's (3 in a row and triplets). Discard all plain, wind (N, E, W, S) and dragon (green, blue and red) and focus on the numbers, circles and bamboo.
