Parasocial interaction isn't new it just wasn't monetized before. People get the same biological response as friendship from watching long running sitcoms. They seemingly build genuine friendships by feeling like they actually know the characters. We're also seeing this with podcasts now. You can hear someone talk for thousands of hours, not necessarily to you, but you're "in the circle". They don't know you at all but you know so much about them. Twitch took it further because it allows direct interaction via donation text notes. That separates the healthy parasocial interaction and the psychologically sick people who need help. Normal people would never donate to a streamer.
Most/all social media in general is carefully designed to exploit the pathologies of the mentally ill, for the benefit of those who own the social media companies. All those millennial communists rioting and burning businesses and killing people on the West coast? Mentally well people do not engage in that behavior. Mentall ill people do engage in it when they are so easily connected by the hundreds. Social media companies, run by left-wing extremists, are catalyzing all of this.
