That's not true at all though. There's a lot of love put into the moveset, the stage, and the music. You could also easily argue the opposite because Sakurai and his team didn't care at all to make Steve fit with the aesthetics of the game. They dropped him in with no graphical changes whatsoever, while Sakurai and his team made an entirely new model instead of just dropping in the N64 ones and calling it a day.

Sakurai still remade the stages to suit Steve's mining. Meanwhile the only thing notable about Cerealbear von Cerealfuck was that he has a new model and they used a Jiggy on his amiibo instead of some random plastic, which ironically, doesn't save his amiibo from being terrible at all!

I was never directly opposed to Steve getting in though, his moveset is just a bit odd for a fighting game character, at least to me and it might take some getting used to or I might have difficultly playing him. I used to post what I thought his moveset could look like and most of it was inspired by Minecraft PvP or unorthodox weapons. Fishing rod as grab was one of those things, but I also included arrows, snowballs, fire charges, shovels. I'll go ahead and post it if you'd like.

Steve fires an arrow directly into the air. The longer the button is held the higher the arrow flies.
>Side Smash (Carrot on a Stick)
Steve lures a Pig with a carrot on a stick having it charge forward in front of him.
>Down Smash (TNT)
Steve places live TNT which detonates shortly after it is placed.
>Up B (Elytra + Firework)
Similar to his real moveset in Smash.

Similar to his real moveset in Smash, although the Minecart can be used to carried his TNT Down Smash.
>Neutral B (Snowballs)
Steve lobs snowballs in an arc.

Steve places a block of sand which falls to the ground if placed in the air. Pressing Down B again will have Steve dig up the sand with a shovel, which can also deal damage.

Steve slams a hoe down in front of him.

Does little knockback, but high slashing damage.

Steve places a stream of water which carries opponents a short distance.
Fishing Rod + Piston for grabs in Smash Ultimate is pretty much what I envisioned too.

Originally it was about dunking on Grinchers. It sort of morphed into a rivalry with Banjo afterwards because he was the only Grinch leak character who didn't get deconfirmed by the final direct.

If its still a competition then Banjo wins by a landslide, if smash started from the gamecube he wouldn't have been such a highly requested character, people that wanted Banjo played smash since then n64 when his games were popular, Steve was only wanted because Redditors and Zoomers like minecraft, it makes sense but sakurai still didn't seem happy in his showcase which is too bad because he also likes minecraft
