Look. I agree with you, but. Valve will only do it if the community is in on it.
Look at Left 4 Dead 2, they had huge update a month ago (the first major update in like 10 years) that was made in the large part by the community. Valve defiantly did it's part in promoting it, but the community kept it alive. It's actually really cool.

Valve has TF2 on the back burner. One day we will get a major update, but who knows when. TF2 will only survive by the community support for the time being. Oh, and good luck with the comic (I really want it too).

Not gonna lie. I've been playing more L4D since the update came out. The update was done very well, and I am enjoying the new content.

TF2 isn't going to die for a long time. New players still come to the game. Older players still play. TF2 has outlived most people's expectations. It's not dying.
