Pathologic 2.
It's a poorly named remake of a highly experimental and unique Russian game that does storytelling better than any other, without lacking in actual interaction.
That is part of the problem. The most interesting discussions about the game happened when new people took interest in it, or with people who are mid-first playthrough. Neither of which is very common anymore. Most people here don't really care about games others are talking about, curiosity is quite uncommon, and with the game being older and not highly reviewed, it's rare to come across someone mid-playthrough.

So I played like an hour of Classic HD and while I loved the atmosphere, the gameplay was so fucking abysmal I just couldn't get into it. I've heard the remake is better, but doesn't it have missing content? Or am I misremembering something?

The remake only has 1 out of 3 routes that were in the original. Each route is the same main story but played from the perspective of a different character. They are going to be adding in the other routes later as either paid or free DLC. As for the gameplay, its far improved in my opinion. There is actually a sprint button now, and an option for fast travel. There is still plenty of walking rest assured, but its not nearly as slow and uneventful as the original. It also has far better survival mechanics that add a lot of genuine tension to the game. Its a much more tense and stressful gameplay experience than the original.
