Innovative/Outmoded concepts you wish had been successful and improved on

>Megaman battle chip system and PEts.
>Seamen (Dreamcast) experience.
>Virtua Fighter's first-person mode
>Real time, menu-based combat a la FFXI, complete with minimal UI. (FFXIII dropped the ball here)
>Special toys tying in to the game to change up the controls and interaction methods.
>Monster Rancher's cd-based monster generation methods.
>Lifeline's voice-control system.
Especially that last one. If Rio wasn't partially-deaf, we could've possibly gotten the tools needed to make Megaman-style PEt stuff work.

Megaman would be amazing now that smartphones are widespread.

>gacha
Shut up, retard

>Personal Terminals are gacha
Why are YOU calling anyone a retard?

my wife rio is retarded

>Lifeline's voice-control system

I've been trying to play the Japanese release, titled Operator's Side as an effort to learn some Japanese vocab. Results are varied, but now I know 自動販売機 off the back of my hand.

You really gotta try and get the accent right though, if you're intermediate level at Japanese and can read a decent amount of kanji, it's worth trying out. You can use a mic with epsxe2 as well which surprised me.

>Monster Rancher's cd-based monster generation methods.
Tell me more

you put random cd ant it generates you monster

A real life cd in the console? Like music cds?

Do you use an emulator? If so, which one? I want to play the game for myself, but I'm not entirely set on what to do.
Yes, a real cd. Like those Christmas cd albums? They scan the code from those and use them to generate monsters. Gave people reasons to go through all of their old disc cases.

there were so few games that used other cds, i wish there was more

Yes, I used PCSX2 to emulate it. You should be able to emulate an aux mic as a USB microphone. In PCSX2, you'll want to look under config>USB>Plugin Settings. Device type is Logitech USB Mic, you should be able to set the Device API as WASAPI and mess with the configure settings to set your mic.

From there, it should just werk.

I think LABO could be an interesing shit if done right but nintendo just made a couple of tech demos and just forgot about it as always

What is LABO about?

Thanks, boss. I'm gonna hole myself up in my room with my PS2 alien-busting waifu. You know if there were any other games like this?

nintendo labo you know

Experiment 112 or something like that

Gonna need an explanation, boss. All I'm seeing is cardboard. Did I miss a crucial period in Nintendo's history?

what the fu

it was just two years ago

Nice. Kinda reminds me of the "Analogue: A Hate Story" games. Didn't think I'd like it, but I fell in love with the story there.

Voice control is a thing that I hated because of how it was implemented in the past but think it's a shame we just kind of gave up on it due to how it was implemented in the past.

The way in which we currently command AI as a player is very limited, expanding it requires a lot of extra key input from the player. We can easily tell an AI to stop, hide or follow just by binding each to F1/F2/F3 and changing their behaviour to reflect this change in state (hide button pressed -> go to nearest designated hiding spot). But doing more complex commands like "Go to the kitchen and barricade the entrances" or "Go to the kitchen and bring me some food" would require a sequence of inputs with UI elements to help you understand your options (Character: John -> go to -> kitchen -> bring -> food -> me) (Character: Jenny -> go to -> kitchen -> barricade -> all entrances). Just being able to command NPCs in this way with your voice, especially considering how good voice recognition is nowadays, would be a lot more elegant. And if enough people committed to designing systems that can command NPCs in this way, we could develop a framework to allow it to be easily implemented into almost every game without devs having to re-invent the wheel every time one of them has the bright idea to try and let the player issue voice commands.

I don't expect to have turing test passing conversations with NPCs. But I'd really like to see the ability to issue commands in a very regular way like talking to be an innovation we see done properly this gen.

This isn't as bad as I thought. Seems to be tied to a recycling initiative, but it looks like it'd still make for a pretty god toy. I'm not against this one.

Not bad.

FF 12s gambit system

I remember that. That was nice. FFXIII tried to streamline it with the paradigms and it failed as a result. Hoping the FFXII remakes will convince SE to bring back more of the FFXI and FFXII concepts.

>You can use a mic with epsxe2
Holy shit I'm definitely trying that out

A lot of jrpgs use systems similar to that, but instead of something as detailed as gambits it's just a generalized strategy.
A recent example that comes to mind is Nier Automata where you can give your ally commands as to what strategy they should use in battle.
It's an interesting idea that could be improved on a lot.

I wish more people had liked FFXII though. But the gambit system + all the other magic, job, and leveling systems was probably too daunting for most players who were coming off FFX. The gambits were leading into borderline programming territory and for most it was probably just too tedious.

Lifeline sucked hard though
