Fat or slim ps2 more reliable. noticed slim scratching disks
Used the Slim for over 10 years, laser got wonky but aside from that it's fine. It's a sturdy machine if you are careful with it.
Fat.
I got a slim from the retro store a few years back and it works great but it gets hot as fuck though.
The slim disc drive is far more reliable by virtue of being newer with less moving parts. Every fat PS2 I've had eventually ends up with problems reading discs, but hard drive mods make that completely irrelevant. I always suggest a fat with a hard drive installed over a slim if possible.
Fat's laser gets dirty and is an ass to clean compared to the Slim. Though the Slim outright doesn't play some games.

Something went seriously wrong with my hard drive. All of a sudden it wouldn't read on my PS2. Tried it on my PC, wouldn't read either, no matter what I did. Thats fine, I've got another. Formatted it properly on PC and added games. Put it on PS2. Played a little bit of Timesplitters 2 and it froze up. And now its not recognized on the PS2... Or the computer.
ps2 model differences
Fat HDD Sata
I've had a 90001 slim for almost 11 years and have played on it for all of those years. Still works great.
Get a fat, softmod it, install a HDD, load all the games you want on it. Games will load faster than using a disc.
It's weird I've seen a lot of people claim that later slim PS2 models don't work with certain games, but I've played many of the games listed as "incompatible" on my silver SCPH-7900 series slim and they work just fine.
Is there more information about this anywhere?
If you're using an old IDE hard drive, it could just be old as fuck. You can either buy an aftermarket SATA hard drive adapter that does not have networking built in. Or if you really want to keep your networking options, you can buy really cheap upgrade boards to change your OEM network adapter to SATA. I went with the ladder and it cost less than $5, got it working with a 1TB SATA hard drive now and it works perfectly.
Dunno how accurate it is but this seems a decent list

Probably just bullshit but I remember hearing some slims couldn't play blue PS2 discs either?
I'm using the aftermarket drive adapter from Banggood. It worked fine for like a year or so. Its weird for two hard drives to die like that though. Could the adapter be killing them or aomething? I mean it is chinkshit.
Clean it and change the thermal paste you fucking pig
Yeah I don't know how much I trust that list because I've played Initial D Special Stage on SCPH-7900 slim, and several of the PS1 games they list as being incompatible as well. No issues.
Yeah that's highly possible. I've never gone with the aftermarket adapters myself, I did the SATA upgrade to my OEM adapter and it's worked perfectly since.
Oink oink nigga.
Already cracked it open its spotless.
>Probably just bullshit but I remember hearing some slims couldn't play blue PS2 discs either?
it's bullshit.
the only thing coming close to it is that with time the laser(both in fats and slims) can stop reading CDs properly, so PS1 discs will give issues, and also PS2 blue discs since those were CDs as well instead of DVDs
PlayStation in general aren't very reliable consoles, so it really doesn't matter what you choose. If you buy used the important thing is the condition itself. But Slim does have compatibility issues with earlier games and 3rd party peripherals. Most Slims will straight up refuse to read 3rd party memory cards for example... And thee newer the model the worse it gets.
slim all the way, faster more powerful doesn't heat up
The slims are not faster or more powerful than the fats at all, and the removal of the hard drive bay really limits the potential it has in terms of mods. Neither my slim nor my fat generate much heat at all, but the slim is noticeably quieter if that's important to you.
You do gotta watch out for some old power supplies on the slims, though. Some of the early models were defective and were prone to overheating.
pcsx2 is the most reliable these days.
It sucks for accuracy and is still not compatible with the entire library. PS2s are so cheap these days I'd prefer to just play on the original hardware.
isn't the only way to get good filters on that stuff is retroarch?
Could depend on the regions too I guess.
Yeah it does like like SCEJ did publish a notice on their website back in the day about certain slim models having potential problems with certain games, but I couldn't find any such notice for SCEA so it's possible the issue was fixed in the firmware for North America.
i love these dork ass dorks
most of that shit was 480i/480p so what kind of filters would you want for it?
uhhhh ones that make it look like A CRT
because otherwise it looks like dogshit?
and i don't mean basic black scanlines that come with the fucking basic filters
CRT tards really are huffing their own farts these days
