Those games were less anti-consumer than what they're doing now though.
If you bought Gold/Silver and Crystal it would cost less than buying Sw/Sh and the expansion pass (which they're explicitly marketing as their alternative to having a 3rd version).
Also you could sell your copy of Gold/Silver or use it for trading, where as you can't sell the base game of Sw/Sh because the expansion passes still require the base game.
So yeah, this is pretty much bullshit.

No exploration, not all the pokemon, the game holds your hand and literally doesnt even let you progress the story without Hop in your asshole every 2 minutes.
