OP here. Yeah, I obviously knew about the Aerith one, that was impossible to dodge but this caught me completely off guard.

I'd love to be able to play this for the first time again.

That entire section was 30 minutes of kino, particularly so because of how the music synched up. It's too bad they decided to hide one of the critical story plot points behind some obscure sidetrack (the one where Zack breaks Cloud out and carries him all the way to Midgard).

I wonder how SE is gonna do this in the remake. hope it delivers

I played the remake before the original. I can see why you'd think that because you probably played the original first, but to me all those random soldiers recognizing Cloud and Hojo spouting that "not in SOLDIER" bullshit meant nothing to me. I just chalked it up as generic villain insults ie. you're worthless etc.

If you'd be any smarter you'd realize that one of the core themes of FFVII is overcoming hardships and not giving up. Cloud is a complete fuck-up, yet keeps pushing on and eventually rises to the occasion.

Cloud supposedly went back to his hometown as an elite SOLDIER, but in actuality couldn't make the cut and was just a Shinra grunt at the time. Early in the game Cloud thinks he's been a SOLDIER for a long time, but when his memory starts to return later in the game he remembers the truth.

They go further than that. You see Zack performing the roles Cloud ascribes to himself, and Sephiroth pretty much spells it out clearly from what I recall.

Could be that it's something a lot sharper when you've played the original and then see the remake rather than vice versa, but it's there.
