Should I play DDS, Devil Survivor, or SMT4 if I've never played an Atlus game before?

Do you value gameplay, story and characters, or a mix between the two?
Story and characters > Gameplay for rpgs
What's your opinion on anime tropes?
If it's fun, I don't care about tropes, I usually just laugh at them since they're not meant to be taken seriously and getting annoyed is missing the point. At least, for SoL anime tropes.
SMT IV is a good starting point
if you like IV then play 3 after
if you don't like IV and want a more (less) traditional jrpg, then DDS (still a good game though)
Do you think there's any merit to doing 3 -> SMT4? What version of 3 should I play?
Good starting points for you might be:
- Anything in the Hashino's Power of Friendship trilogy (P3 FES, P4 Golden, P5 Royal)
- Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner
- Devil Survivor: Overclocked
- Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker
If you can read Japanese, you could also start with:
- Megami Ibunroku Persona
- Persona 2: Innocent Sin (PS1)
Doesn't IS have a translation? I can read Nippon though, so doesn't bother me. Guess I'll go with Overclocked, then 2 if I like it, then eventually get to the others on that list. Thanks.
The Innocent Sin port on the PSP completely watered down the gameplay, the entire game becomes a cakewalk as soon as you get access to Fusion Spells.
>Doesn't IS have a translation
Yes.
3, for a SMT newfag, is pretty ball-crushing if you don't pay attention and don't use every tool at your disposal
IV is much more accessible while slowly easing new players into enjoying the mechanics of the grandaddy of JRPGs
common complaints I hear for Nocturne are
>the encounter rate is too high
literally some of the first demons you encounter have both Estoma and Riberama, this should not be an issue
>my ass keeps getting reamed by back-attacks
maybe invest in AGI and LUK so you don't get sniped
>hama and mudo is so bullshit!!!!
Tetraja and you can also innately resist them, don't be a bitch
also LUK helps you dodge ailments, which Instant-kill spells are
I meant P3, sorry. I'm too contrarian to play Nocturne first.
DDS. It is simpler while teaching you the basics of gameplay and getting you used to spell name structure of the series. Plus it's my favorite in the SMT series.
Just make sure if you're playing P3, it's FES and not Portable.
The thing I hate the most is noncanon breast size
Is order FES -> Replay on Portable with FemMC? I heard it changes the game enough to be worth it. But thanks, I'll do FES.
P3 is my favorite game of all time
while I understand that it is weaker in many areas compared to other SMT games, its vibes and characters really got me
Junpei best boy now and forever
Yukari is also pretty cool too I guess
You CAN play the Portable female route after beating FES if you really want to. I personally don't think it's worth it, but there are a few interesting tidbits you learn about certain characters.
post the blacked one
Haru=Makoto=Anne>Smelly Futaba
based
Correct but remove Makoto from your ranking as I already hit that (sexually)
Based
Wtf? They are underage.
It's kind of sad that seeing something like this anywhere immediately makes me think the individual is baiting.
Sure thing.

Haru=Anne>Smelly Futaba
Makoto and Haru aren't.
Still pretty creepy to sexualize 17-18 years olds.
17 year olds, yes. 18 year olds, no.
