The problem with FF games these days is every single time they bite off way more than they can chew, then they have to scale back and they end up with a game that satisfies nobody. FFIX was probably the last real Final Fantasy game because it was the last game before they decided Final Fantasy needed to be overly cinematic, ridiculously expensive bullshit.

Even if it's obvious that the player is not in control of it, it's clear that they wanted people to think that they would be, which is pure evil. Honestly I'm not sure what benefit they even get from lying about the game in early trailers, when people find out that the trailers were lying it just pisses them off. It's like they forget the internet exists and people don't just buy games blindly anymore.

Also this trailer came out in 2006 where Square was still riding strong off of the PS1 titles and FFX, so people were still foolish enough to think they would deliver and hadn't been weighed down by their obsession with tech development and mass market delusions hackery.

It is weird as fuck how they put out an entire anime series and then a full-on movie for FFXV, before they'd even released the game. They were really counting on the FF name being enough.

I try not to think about it but you're right, its actually very embarassing to see how much effort went into the multimedia stuff. I wonder how much of a meltdown 15 fans will have when 16 comes out, is great, and gets its own multimedia universe after earning it.
