Its a good game thou, maybe its a little too grindy in some routes but its not that bad unless you want to do a 100% route

The if... stands for "what if" because the game is a what if scenario if SMT1 never happened.

I haven't finished, but I liked the introduction and the gameplay is much, MUCH better than SMT1.

SMT2 is fine except for the backtracking parts that can be skipped with a guide. If...'s gameplay is more balanced but its story isn't as interesting as 1 or 2's.

However 1's gameplay is genuine fucking torture and I can't recommend anyone to play it unless they have a really high tolerance for old JRPG bullshit.

I love Etrian Odyssey because it's actually challenging and difficult. SMT1 is torture not because it's difficult, but because battles are FUCKING BORING ENDURANCE ROUNDS OF SPAMMING SLEEP/NERVE BULLETS AND ZIO UNTIL YOU WIN. THERE'S ZERO SKILL OR TACTICAL DECISIONS TO BE MADE IN IT.

SJ's story is fine. I'll concede that 1's story is better but I really love SJ's unique setting, story, and characters. I also love its gameplay even if demon co-op is lackluster compared to press turn in later games.

God why the fuck didn't atlus remake SMT 1/2/If... with the SJ engine on DS/3DS? It would've been perfect and they could've fixed the gameplay.
