I refuse to buy any "Virtual" ""Reality"" hardware of any sort. I am playing my games with my mouse and keyboard, on my screen at a reasonable view distance.

Luckily this based Argentinian man is making it a reality.

You're missing out user. It's a wonderful way to experience new worlds and truly immerse yourself. I understand it must be tough not being able to play the newest game in one of your favorite franchises, but it really is worth it to play how the developers intended.

Alyx rules. 11/10 game. Everyone I know who has tried it on my Index (a bunch of casual gamers and a few hardcore types) have all been absolutely blown away and overwhelmed by how immersive it is. Really wish it wasn't so expensive so everyone on Zig Forums could try it, I think everyone's opinion would change drastically. It's truly a ton of fun and you feel like a badass.

>playing a watered down HL game whose only gimmick is VR, without VR

Imagine playing through Alyx without being able to do this.

I don't know, it feels so retarded (and wrong) to put some oversized glasses and then waddle around in my room like a blind drooling downie.

I'm here for the story and dialogue. Though without Laidlaw I don't know how it'll be.

okay

i watched it on youtube, the story is pretty good. dialogue can get a little annoying because Alyx talks more than Gordan did and its got more hand holding

I get you man-- don't get me wrong, I KNOW I look like a goofy retard in my apartment. My girlfriend makes fun and records me doing it. But at the end of the day the only thing stopping you from having a shit ton of fun is yourself and your anxiety in "looking stupid".

Just try VR once, even with a simple game like the archery from The Lab and you will probably change your mind.

I really don't get why people say it's watered down. It has everything you want in a half life game. Puzzles, combat, exploration, creepy fucking environments and memorable characters. It's genuinely really fucking cool and it's a big shame so many people on here don't get to try it because I really think it rules.

what mod? don't remember this area in the base game.

Hallway Hoedown on the workshop, pretty short but fun

Any real FPS fight is ten times more intense than that. And if I wanted to do some exercise or practice my aim, I'd play some laser game IRL.

If I get the opportunity to try it, I would give it a shot. I just don't feel comfortable getting that immersed.

Erik Wolpaw is basically Laidlaw's apprentice, he wrote a lot of Half Life 2, Portal, and Portal 2 (and also the first Psychonauts), and is the lead writer for Alyx.
Laidlaw was also heavily consulted during the writing of Alyx even though he's not officially credited.

Poorfag cope as usual, god forbid a game with a real budget and a big name behind it allows itself to take any risks. If you complain about the industry but shit on Alyx you're part of the problem.

>I really don't get why people say it's watered down
linear level design
only a few weapons
teleportation
no platforming
no melee

I play video games, no glorified exercise routines or rebranded Wii-Fit. I want to get immersed by a proper story and good visuals, that's more than enough.

>teleportation
Isn't there an option to smooth-walk in the game? I remember Valve showcasing both.
>no melee
>no platforming
How would do that in a VR game, flail around your arms in the air?

>How would do that in a VR game, flail around your arms in the air?
It works pretty well in some games, I have a blast climbing around in Boneworks and the melee works somewhat
HLA not having these two things does kinda suck, but hopefully if Valve continues to dabble in VR they'll make it less safe

I'm gonna be a Thomas for now. To me, those VR games could be good if they encourage people to move their asses and teach some basic useful gestures (first-aid, proper handling, etc), but really I don't like the idea of spending my time with my eyes in another world.

This is like eating food without being able to taste it, yes you get to eat it and feel it but you're not getting what is actually is

>How would do that in a VR game, flail around your arms in the air?
you cant do a lot of stuff due to VR, which is why its watered down and you just admitted it

>gonna be a Thomas for now

Laidlaw has always publicly denied any involvement in HLA in any capacity. Valve's public statements to the contrary are at best stretching the truth about what were probably just a few isolated and casual email exchanges with co-workers he's still in contact with, and at worst fake marketing to try to take advantage of Laidlaw's name recognition in the Valve fanbase.

St Thomas, only believe what I see.

You’re all suckers for falling for the body data mining scam that they’ll use when they force gender swapping onto prisoners of war in the next Holocaust.

>I don't know, it feels so retarded (and wrong) to sit on a chair for 8 hours and stair at a screen in my room like a braindead drooling downie

I have a CV1 Rift and it doesn't seem worth picking up Alyx with how shit the visuals are in this headset. I'm holding out for a next gen Index with Reverb G2 levels of clarity / resolution.

Erik Wolpaw has actually joined last minute to make the ending not be complete shit. The majority of the game was written by nuvalve

No it wasn't. Read the Final Hours. Wolpaw, Pinkerton, and Vanaman rewrote every single line in the game after they were brought on board to remove Yescombe's poorly reviewed story.

Alyx is a very pretty game with good graphics and nice VR quirks but it is severely lacking as a HL game.

>0 physics puzzles
>sprinting is gone
>any actual verticality or speed like in the originals is gone
>enemies are repetitive and the combine take a lot of blows but are exceedingly stupid so they just become obstacles that burn ammo
>in fact every enemy chews through ammo now, so ammo is laying everywhere that you have to constantly be picking up in little handfuls
>weapons are gonna be piss weak no matter how much you upgrade them
>half the game is digging through boxes and drawers looking for "resin"
>no sense of momentum, just switching from zombies to combine with no real distinctions compared to HL2 where you moved from metrocops, to a mix of metrocops and zombies, to a swarm of different kinds of zombies with varying strategies, antlions, combine, so on
>combine look odd in general and have goofy armor and their voices aren't as on ball as the original
>music was very weak and forgettable background noise
>voice acting for the announcer, and alyx ironically weren't the best
>russel was a VR tack on that wasn't needed and while moderately funny was more pointless sound to fill the air
>enemies don't even have decals from bullet wounds on them 90% of the time, if at all
>3 little fucking hearts for health like it's an arcade game instead of the very functional 100 HP source method
>zero melee weapons in a VR game based on a series people are reminded of just by looking at a crowbar
>tedious walky and looky section -> spooky section -> shooty gallery section endless cycle
>no vehicles
>hacking "puzzles" get old fast

6.5/10

Someone once said “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results”. How long have you complained about VR? How many times have you typed out the same debunked bullet points?

Pointless it was made for vr it wont be the same without just watch someone play it

get yourself a Quest 2 for $300 and stream it over wifi. you don't need to spend $1000.
This no VR mod is a huge waste of time, looks like shit

>Facebook
Big yikes

honestly how many esl third worlders are itt

>muh data
cringe

>Any real FPS fight is ten times more intense than that
Post one.

Oh you have to admit it had at least one good track

Still wish they kept Merle as the voice actress though.

yes, lets pretend no one here has a facebook account

>Isn't there an option to smooth-walk in the game? I remember Valve showcasing both.
There is.

>How would do that in a VR game, flail around your arms in the air?
Essentially yes, there are multiple games that have adequate melee combat and a few that have dabbled in platforming.
A simple retractable knife like republic commando would have been perfect, but valve likely decided it would have been too complicated for people to grasp or whatever.

This music and the music at the end with the Vault are both good, but that's also because they're the only two I can even remember. Any other time there was either no music at all or it was the same combat sting that fades out when you finish off the last enemy. I don't even remember their being any ambient music - as compared to HL2 though, which I'm pretty sure had 1-2 songs for every level you were in on top of generic combat music that could play.

i guess more power to yah. If you can get it, i recommend experiencing it through vr. Half-life has been pushing boundaries. It's in the name, evolution of gaming leaps in half lives!

i used to but i couldn't hide my power level and sperged out so now i'm complaining about vr to compensate
