carmack's "loyalty" was driving the gaming industry forwards by lobbying for graphics cards and the likes. joining a company like facebook which is absolutely obviously not interested in progressing the industry and only their own profits is clearly not in line with advancing computer technology. even if facebook was the only VR developer it would be more "carmack" to support or create a competitor that is genuinely there for the technology. there would be no drama had he joined valve in developing VR, even if that company is not about producing games anymore and instead maintaining their plattform.
