you have to do that once, then you get a pokeball and catch an extra mon, your hp is now effectively doubled. its called pacing user, pokemon was great at pacing your progress out.

It'd be a pretty fun thought experiment on what if Pokemon hadn't taken off like it did but didn't do poorly enough to get completely canned from being potentially revisited like many Japanese games in the 90s.

You'd have gotten "Pokemon 2" as Gold/Silver was originally meant to be, likely without Iwata's extra efforts in allowing for Kanto, along with Pokemon Stadium on N64, and something along the lines of Let's Go on the Switch except with traditional catching since Pokemon Go would have never been a thing.
