ZOOMER STARTING TOTAL WAR

I’m looking to get into total war and I don’t know where to start. I’m 22 so no kid level impatience. I also adore Deus Ex 1 and I just finished Fallout 2 so I love old games and I don’t mind jankiness. Where do I start? I’ve been looking at Rome because that’s historically what I’m into the most.

Then go with Rome. Your interest in the setting matters more than the game.

OG Rome is viable, so is Medieval 2. Whether they're viable vanilla experiences is debatable, but I'd say you can give a short campaign a whirl in either game, then decide whether you want to get deeper into the game and mod it.

Shogun 2 is the best starting point and works fine vanilla with no mods.

Warhammer is normie tier

Isn't it more specifically Fall of The Samurai that's the best starting point? Considering it is standalone and all.

Warhammer 1+2. They are on sale.

I think Shogun 2/Fall of the Samurai are overall the best games unmodded so they'd be the best starting point if you don't have strong preferences in regards to the setting, FotS being a bit better.

Attila is the best modern Total War game, desu.

Play CHADal CHAD CHADhammer 2 and don't play anything else

Which DLC's are worth it?

Is buying the first game for the campaign map worth it?

The newer DLC's are generally better than the older DLC, though skaven need one of their DLCs to be more fun since most of their fancy units are locked by DLC.

Yes, first game comes with five different races that you can use in the second game, and most people prefer the combined map if you have both game. It's pretty much an entire expansion pack. If you mean actually playing the first game, it hasn't been updated since the second game came out so the balance is completely different and lacks a bunch of things from the second game.

The first game, in addition to effectively being DLC for several races (Empire, Bretonnia, Dwarfs, Greenskins, Vampire Counts), unlocks the Mortal Empires campaign map, which is superior to the Vortex Campaign in WH2. Moreover, if you want to play Skaven, you kinda sorta need the Ikit Claw DLC, since that includes several key units that Skaven is quite frankly impotent without.

Other than that, DLCs are only necessary if you want to play the specific factions/lords. They still appear on the map as enemies.

Thanks homies. I'll buy the first game for the campaign and the skaven dlc if it's cheap enough.

>homies
You need to leave

Don't think so, homie.

It's short for homosexual

Total warhammer 2 cd key and pirate the dlc.

Warhammer and Three Chinkdoms play more like MOBAs, don't bother with them.

Go for Rome 1. Then go Rome 2 and decide for yourself which one you prefer. Lots of oldfags don't like Rome 2 and vice versa.

I was in your shoes OP two years ago. I rolled like this
Rome 1 ---- medieval 2 ----- shogun 2 ---- warhammer 2

>Is buying the first game for the campaign map worth it?
Yes. Probably the most important dlc.

When it comes to mini dlcs it depends on the races you wanna play. If Skaven The Prophet & The Warlock is a must.

If Orcs + Elves Warden and the Paunch

what up marfan

Medieval 2

A total war veteran here. What you want depends on your preferences.

1. Oldies: Shogun 2/FotS/Rome offer the most diverse although dated experience with most complete interactions between spies, diplomacy, resources and warring. Battle speeches are a nice touch if you like to immerse and rp. These games are old though and that turns some people off.

2. New games / Fantasy
Warhammer, no question about it. Grab both wh1 and wh2. WH2 has 4 high fantasy races (high elves, dark elves, lizardmen and ratmen). WH1 has more traditional fantasy races (humans, dwarves, orcs, undead and so on). These campaigns are already dated compared to wh2, but they can be played in WH2 with updated mechanics so getting both games is necessary for full campaign experience. I'd recommend getting both base games, trying Empire in WH2 Mortal Empires and see if you like it. Only get DLCs if its unique race/faction you want to play another run with.

3. New games / history
Bith 3kingdoms (china) and Troy (greece) have both merits, but I've heard they fall a bit flat. 3k has better diplomacy and graphics, Troy has better battle maps. Stay away from Thrones of Britannia at all costs.

OP here. Rome II complete edition is $14.99 right now. Thank you guys. Much love.

Play Medieval 2 or Rome or even Shogun 2 if you want something newer. Don't play the new games first

Medieval 2 has some of the best mods of all the Total War games, which can imitate (or even surpass) later entries.
I honestly prefer Call of Warhammer to Warhammer 2 Total War because Medieval 2 has better battles. The big Roman-era mod, EB2, is considered one of the most autistic mods ever made for a TW game, though.

If you want a Roman-era experience, Rome 1 > Rome 2 any day. Both are fun, but later TW games have such casualized gameplay that they're very hard to appreciate. The campaign map might be a little sluggish, but there are a few fixes.
I also recommend that you go to /vst/, because TW gets a lot of discussion there.

Don’t play anything and fuck off from here you damn retard

>Isn't it more specifically Fall of The Samurai that's the best starting point
no, because the battle and campaign mechanic is to peculiar, the campaign shoves you into a grand alliance fairly soon, and the battles are gunline centric with sieges being completely unlike all other games, even empire.

NO!
GOD NO!
NOT THAT ONE!

Warhammer 2 is so good you can't go wrong with it.
Shogun 2 is also great

IT TOO LATE AND IM POOR I THOUGHT PEOPLE SAID IT WAS OKAY. Can mods save it?

>Can mods save it?
They'll make it more tolerable, but won't save it. If you haven't played much and are on Steam/GOG, you should be able to refund it.
