Who?

Because Sony is suck.

Sony merged their markets so there were too many guys for fewer jobs, the youngers guys took command.

As a white man he knew his time was up.

ESL

He reached the top and had to stop.

Kaz Hirai left because even though his popularity was through the roof. He used the money set aside for investors to try extending Sony's assets. It worked, but he cut off the hands that feed him, and refused to step down.

Jack Tretton activated his golden parachute because Sony was on the verge of absolute bankruptcy at the time and they owed millions upon millions, before they started aggressively selling off property and divisions.

Shawn Layden was replaced because Sony knew his success was based on a series of random events which he had no involvement with. Mainly Spider-Man and God of War.

Probably thought he was going to be the next ceo but got demoted instead.

>white man
That's not a white man.

a literal who

He left because he had disagreement on the future of PlayStation. He was right.

Supposedly he was clashing with the board regarding the future direction of SIE's studios while there was a lot of infighting where John Kodera stepped down as president of Playstation so he decided to leave because he wasn't going to get anywhere. Jim Ryan got the president job and promoted Herman Hulst to the position Layden was in.

>He used the money set aside for investors to try extending Sony's assets.
Source? I though he got old and just didn't want to work anymore since he was already rich as fuck (I think he was the highest paid jap ceo for a couple of years). He even remained at Sony's board for a few years after he stepping down from being ceo. Kenichiro Yoshida was already being prepped to take over long before Kaz stepped down.

Yeah.

Sony still isn't gay enough

>he had disagreement on the future of PlayStation. He was right
He was the guy that wanted to focus on "fewer but more polished" pretentious cinematic games. Hell, the downfall of SCEA happend under his leadership. Unironically Hermen Hulst is way better fit for the position since he's not just another soulless suit. At least he actually made games.

i said this years ago and i'll say it again. jim ryan being at playstation will kill the brand. he butchered SCEE and closed down 99% of the studios there under his leadership. his claim to fame is securing the UEFA contract in europe which made the ps platform the go-to for fifa games. his methodology is to throw money at things to make them happen hence the sudden rise in timed exclusives under his watch. we know he was in talks to secure starfield as a ps5 exclusive just months back.

layden was shit and he fucked up with all that movie shit, but playstation had it's greatest ever period under his watch.

>John Kodera
Now this is the biggest mystery.
>House suddenly stepping down/getting fired even though he was managing PS at the height of the brand's success
>this literal who getting promoted and then demoted in a year
>Yoshida getting demoted
>Hermen Hulst getting a massive promotion from the head of a studio to managing all SIE studios
Like what the fuck happened? Will we ever find out?

>He was the guy that wanted to focus on "fewer but more polished" pretentious cinematic games.
I'll give you that but Jim Ryan is actually the one you should be on the lookout out for. About as "trustworthy" as Don Mattrick.

>layden was shit and he fucked up with all that movie shit, but playstation had it's greatest ever period under his watch.
It really wasn't. He was just the ceo of SCIA and then the head of 1st party studios.
The only thing that happened under his watch was the sharp increase in cinematic games at the cost of having more diversified 1st party game portfolio.

>Jim Ryan closed down Studio Liverpool
I knew there was a good reason to hate the fucker.

>Jim Ryan is actually the one you should be on the lookout out for
Doubtful. He's just your typical anglo suit. He doesn't give a fuck as long as the numbers are going up. Hulst is in charge of games now and I unironically think that this is a good thing.
Notice how PS5 is launching with non-cinematic games? I don't think that would happen with Layden in charge.

at least layden tapped into the first party talent sony had and they made some brilliant games regardless of what our opinions of them are. millions loved them and it propelled the playstation brand to new heights. he gave them the time and resources needed to make good games. jim ryan is clearly forcing the issue of exclusives because he's a brainlet. he sees what's popular and pushes hard for those things without any forward thinking. the whole reason MS are now going completely gung ho and thinking fuck this lets beat sony at their own game and buying up massive publishers is directly related to jim ryans constant moneyhat of 3rd party games. i am almost certain MS pulled the trigger on zenimax once they heard sony were buying up exclusivity for their biggest games. this will only accelerate and i expect MS to buy another publisher soon. they're playing jim ryans game but at 100x the scale. if he didn't piss off microsoft the industry wouldn't be in this position.

jim ryan will be the death of the playstation brand. you heard it here first.

Microsoft accelerated and bought a publisher because they are currently trying to keep Amazon and Google getting a foothold and getting on the industry turf more than Sony moneyhatting games but eventually people are gonna get resentful about 3rd party moneyhats. It took just one stupid moneyhat (Rise Of The Tomb Raider) for MS to get blasted for it last gen. This gen when Sony is producing fewer of it's 1st party games and relying on moneyhats then not revealing (It took an independent press to get out of Square that it's six months exclusivity before PC launch and twelve months for Xbox for Final Fantasy XVI). There probably won't be as much forgiveness on them if they keep doing what Microsoft was blasted for doing last gen.

>the whole reason MS are now going completely gung ho and thinking fuck this lets beat sony at their own game and buying up massive publishers is directly related to jim ryans constant moneyhat of 3rd party games.
The reason why MS is buying a studios is because they are chasing the gaas/netflix for games model. A service like this wouldn't work without steadily feeding it new games to keep the subscribers hooked. They literally need to buy a lot of studios for their service to work.

>i am almost certain MS pulled the trigger on zenimax once they heard sony were buying up exclusivity for their biggest games.
Buyouts don't just happen overnight. They probably have been negotiating the deal for over a year.

MS got a lot of shit for rottr and rightfully so, because that's shit, but sony hasn't had the same backlash. i mean in just the last 12 months they've moneyhatted death stranding, ff7r, nioh 2 and announced several more for the ps5 launch and 2021. it's become normalized for playstation since they have this reputation of exclusives now. it's like people expect games to be exclusive regardless of it being a shitty 3rd party moneyhat. it's not something that will change soon either. MS are going to play the same game except they have money to buy out entire studios/publishers instead of annual timed exclusivity.

yeah, but at the same time they don't need to buy publishers for that. they can make deals. they just announced rainbow 6 siege on gamepass which is a massive game and they didn't need to buy ubisoft for it.

>They probably have been negotiating the deal for over a year.
talks started this summer according to spencer, and the deal will be finalized by next summer.

Jumped ship

>moneyhatted death stranding
Dude, they fully funded the game and they even own the ip. Also, I doubt that they would maoneyhat nioh 2.

>talks started this summer according to spencer, and the deal will be finalized by next summer.
It's essentially done. The LOI has been signed. It's just legal formalities and it will close out at the end of Microsoft's financial year. Apparently what happened was MS was able to meet Zenimax's price at the start with an all cash acquistion and had a plan to retain as many staff as possible. Zenimax just took it because the other offers they were getting were financed Cash and Stock deals (As they had talked to other publishers and even Sony apparently)

Sasuga moneybags Microsoft. They can just swing that financial dick like nobody else.

Sinking ship
