Gone are the days of taking long shots on new IPs that could easily fail and lose a company money. It's why we only get sequels to movies, it's why we get a new Asscred game and a new Cawdoot every year. The average age of 'adulthood' has increased to the mid-30's, and more and more people have accepted playing games as a reasonable hobby. It's not without precedent; Gambling has been huge with nips forever, and even in the US a shit ton of old fucks love piping quarters into slot machines. It's hard to say precisely, but that's my guess.

And the actual money sank into developing the game is usually around the 1m~ mark for most games, now. I'm honestly not sure if that's accounting for marketing, but look at something like Alundra or Brave Fencer Musashi for the PSX and tell me there was a person on that crew that'd even SEEN a million dollars before.

Was born in 87 so I would have been like what 10 when the Playstation 1 was hitting its stride a couple years in. I was a N64 kid for better or worse and I certainly didn't have that many games. I probably had a dozen or so when the generation was said and done.

The Playstation 2 I actually bought with my first job, blew my whole first paycheck on it. It was a couple years in at that point. I was getting games as gifts and with my own money but I also had a car to take care of and concerts to attend, and my parents decided I should pay for half my college to "learn responsibility". I probably ended the gen with 20 games.

Anyway, with PS4, current gen, being an adult with a well paid salaried position, I can buy any game I want anytime.
