First one is very stripped down. A decent, but very very short and thin Diablo clone.
Second one is a lot more fleshed out, and a decent alternative to Diablo 3, but even then, it was more of a rebellious choice, because Diablo 3 was garbage in ways that have since been fixed, and D3 is the better option in every way, today.

The BIG problem with D3 in 2012 was the cash shop, the lack of endgame content, and a lot of little balance issues. Diablo 3 in 2020 doesn't have those problems.
Not to say Torchlight 2 is bad! Just saying it was the obvious choice back in the day, in ways that make it less obvious of a choice today

Torchlight 1 is very blatant Diablo 1 throwback (ancient evil lurking under the town, you keep going deeper and deeper under the town and finding fucked shit) while Torchlight 2 is a blatant Diablo 2 throwback (one of the player characters from 1 defeated the ancient evil but now became possessed by it and is a dark wanderer going around the world on some quest leaving destruction in his wake).
Not surprising really as both were made by ex-Blizzard North people, including all the core people that made Diablo 1 and 2.

First is great, 2nd is better.
3rd I haven't played in its early access but lots of behind the scenes drama with new parent owner wanting to turn it into an mmo microtransaction shitfest before devs were able to revert it but not without the damage already being done and their parent company demanding something released, so its quite fucked.

Oh and Torchlight 3 is a shitshow made by literal chinks after the core devs quit Runic Games after hostile takeover from Perfect World. They went on to make Rebel Galaxy game after that.
Also Torchlight 3 isn't even 3, originally it was a chinese mobile game by the name of "Torchlight Frontier" but Perfect World being the kikes they are, decided to release it on PC and consoles as well and rename it to Torchlight 3 for maximum profits from branding.
It's a fucking shitshow so stay the fuck away from that one, only Torchlight 1 and 2 are good.

Synergies is easily Top 1, it's sort of Median XL equivalent for Torchlight 2.
Then there's various mods such as Torchlight 1 classes ported and rebalanced for 2.
Necromancer class mod.
Fuckton of different new class mods in general, various new dungeons and shit.
Visual mods, ton of them.
For starters though you just can't go wrong with Synergies Mod.
