Nu-Doom modernized the classic FPS style and in my opinion made the formula unplayable. But it's just personal taste, I know that a lot of people loved spending more time in the air than on the ground doing combos with your guns and using skills in the cooldown system.

The formula the nuDooms follow works fine, it’s just far closer to a regular hack-and-slash like traditional God of War or Darksiders: Here’s a hallway, here’s some stops in the hallway with something to collect, here’s a fight

If you're fine with shotgun shells being strewn about hell, you should be fine with shotgun shells popping out of a demon's guts. It's pure video game logic and at some point you stop trying to rationalize it because game balance is more important than plot justification.

And it’s been the standard for 95% of shooters since the 2000, when nearly all games started to get too big for fuckwits to “get lost” in.
There’s thankfully been a few shooters providing otherwise since 2016: You can get the gorgeous and satisfying but market-tested safe NuDooms while the other new shooters fill every other niche.

Yes, it's an interesting formula and I don't doubt it is a good one. But I don't know exactly how fans of classic FPS would react to that same formula if it weren't for the name "Doom".
For example, I saw ZeroMaster playing Doom Eternal, and he's extremely good, but would he be dedicating himself to Doom Eternal if the game was called "The warriors of Nuh-Tahr 2"? What I mean, it's a decent gameplay, but I personally have the impression that it's not exactly the type of gameplay that people who play classic FPS are really interested in. But it may just be a biased opinion because I am taking into account my particular experience.

btw ultrakill is also in that category and runs rings around the new doom games

I could imagine demons placing them on traps or as a lure, certainly better than them a demon dropping them on death when killed in an arbitrary way.
I can also give a game from ‘93 a bit more slack than one who sees the need to make weapons float but not ammo for reason.
