Trying to get less people to vote is republican strategy, it's how they win.
The usual euphemism of 'we have to stop all this widespread election fraud that there is no evidence of yet' or whatever is still in play, but the fact that merely telling people to go vote is a partisan issue now kind of gives the game away.

The electoral college is a complicated issue. Personally I don't like the idea of weighted votes, but we aren't in a really good position to change it. Either state and local governments need to have a bit more power to address the needs of the people in lower population states, or state governments need to be mostly done away with so the country is more homogenized in terms of the impact of federal legislation.

That said, the electoral college isn't even just weighted votes, it's a completely fucking retarded system. It could be reformed to be more effective in a ton of different ways, like maybe the way that votes are won could be uniform across the union instead of some being winner take all and some being proportional, maybe faithless electors shouldn't be a thing and the electoral votes should just be calculated from the popular vote without a middleman.

A system that is half assed and doesn't work is the republican dream, because that means it either directly benefits them or their donors, or they can justify budget cuts which also directly benefit them or their donors.
Take for example the American public school system which has been steadily being defunded and dismantled. More recently, take for example the post office. Sabotage the system and then use the fact that it is now experiencing problems as justification to further sabotage it. Curiously the people at the helm of these decisions tend to have ties to certain private competitors to public services, like the guy that the president put at the wheel of the post office. I wonder what questionable motives he might have to want to drive the postal service into a wall.
