I honestly have no clue where they can go with the series. Every new game in the series has to escalate the danger more thus causing the series heroes to escalate their capabilities until its no longer a survival horror game but a hyper anime action game. They reset this with Ethan but you can already tell they haven't learned anything because the danger once again is escalating causing Ethan to become even stronger/capable and once again we're leaving the realm of survival horror and going back into action horror.
Consider this: In RE1 it was a mansion, in RE2 it was Raccoon City, in RE4 it was a village and cult in Spain, then Africa, then its an ongoing worldwide affair. How do you top that? Are we going to fight zombies on the moon now? I just don't see where they're taking the series.

You don't need to. RE7 proved you can make self contained stories. I wouldn't even care if RE games were unrelated to each other or their worlds were different each time like FF games. RE8 shows us vampires/witches and werewolves which is new to the series. No one said RE games should have been stuck to zombie concept anyways. They can even go similar route to Silent Hill-esque setting of RE7 with more supernatural stuff and I would still play it.
