SH just kinda throws you right into the action as well actually. You don't even have to watch the opening video and NG+ starts you off when you wake up in the cage

For several reasons:
>there is no consistency
As an example think of the reload button in shooters.
Is it on Square or R1? The player expects the button to be somewhere but they don't know where so the game must teach them.
>there are no manuals
Can't even look in the manual for a control layout now either, that's how Metal Gear Solid 1 managed this.

Becauzs both games are sequel that expects the player to have prior knowledge of the series. I was actually shocked when I first booted out MW3, and the first level is downs you right in the fucking middle of defending NYC. I wish more sequels would get rid of tutorial, and cut straight to the point.

Resident Evil 1 had no tutorials and MGS was made while putting in mind that most people didn't play the MSX games

Do you really think MGS1's first room was anything other than a tutorial? It's perhaps the most braindead easy and self-explanatory sneaking section in the franchise.

Also, games with more complex mechanics often require tutorials, even if they're just text pop-ups during gameplay.

The opening of both Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil 2 serve as semi-tutorials.

It's worth adding that as games have progressed, control inputs have also increased.
NES had 4 buttons and a dpad
SNES had 6 facebuttons, 2 shoulder buttons, and dpad
N64 was...well.
PS1 had 6 face buttons, 4 shoulder buttons, dpad
Ps2 had all that, but introduced twin joysticks which also functioned as 2 additional buttons via click inputs
Then came pressure sensitive inputs on most those buttons
Now you have ALL of that, and touchpads which also function as 2 additional buttons.

Tutorials are often a joke at best with very few games implementing them organically, but it's easy to see why modern games are more reliant on them when the control inputs are 3~5x what they were in older days.

Every gaming generation is roughly half as intelligent as the one before it.

RE1 is also a really slow burn with most rooms only have 1 to 2 enemies. The opening bit of RE2 probably has more zombies than 70% of RE1 entire game.
For MGS, I doubt they tried to make a soft reboot since the story plays heavily on the previous games.

People ARE stupid and can't learn things on their own. On top of a lot of people having an incredibly low attention spam. When you make a game and the intent is to make as much money and sell it to as many people as possible, handholding helps.

MGS is partially a remake of MG1. it reused a lot of ideas because the MSX games weren't that popular and Kojima knew most people weren't familiar with them.
that's why there's an entire section telling the story of MG1 and MG2 in MGS.

and yeah RE1 had less zombies but it didn't tell the player anything.
Heck, Chris and Jill start with unequipped weapons and if you don't mess around with the inventory you wouldn't know that you have to equip a weapon to attack.

I feel like the extra "accessibility" of games helped contribute to that. Kids were perfectly capable of figuring out these games in the 70s/80s/90s. Some guidance is fine, and I'll even accept tutorials that still feel like they're part of the game world itself (ie. Sam Fisher's training in Splinter Cell), but some are just egregious.

Yeah, and if you are exploring in the intended way as Jill, you would already have a shotgun, and for Chris, you wouldn't even be going in that direction first.

you can't have a shotgun before the room with broken shotgun puzzle which is a bit before going outside the first house.

Got I fucking HATE long winded tutorials. And a lot of them are unskippable too.

Chris can't, but Jill can get the Shotgun early on without the broken shotgun. She also gets a GL when she comes up upstairs, doesnt even need a key.

Because back then you didn't have as much competition for your time, and people didn't own as many games. So you had to give a game your full attention. Now if a game pisses you off at all you refund it on Steam and buy any other game on sale for $1.

The actual non meme reason is gamss came with manuals that told you how to play beforehand and we dont have those anymore.

wrong, many old games had a dedicated tutorial section in the menu where you tried button combinations and it wasn't tied to the game itself
